If you have a Providian credit card, you get your FICO score for free (updated every few months). The Paypal credit card is a Providian card, which I have. It has 23% interest, so I don't use it, but I keep my account open for the free FICO scores :)

Yea I also have a providian card. The FICO score they give you is from Trans Union. It may not be from all 3 but at least its useful to see.

Do the FICO scores from all 3 credit unions differ much? Meaning if one is like 730 could another be under 700? I never checked with all 3 before and just go by the one I see in my providian account.
They can differ a fair amount but I would think within 5-10% of each other. I was doing some credit repair and Experian managed to re-age some old accounts and dig up some old lates and they are about 30-40 pts lower than my EQ and TU scores. Bastards.

I heard there are two different types of tiers for credit cards-Tier 1 and Tier 2. Any validity?

No, I think it's a sliding scale, which will dictate your credit limit, interest rate, etc.

Yes, it's fairly common for the three scores to be 20-30 points different (if not more).

see thats what I worry about, providian and transunion gives me a 796, but I'm wondering if the other two unions have me much lower

I love how they say this on my credit report

Here are the top factors that reflect your good credit behavior (they are listed in priority of impact on your score):

+You have no late payments reported on your credit accounts
+ You have a low proportion of balances to credit limits (high credit) on your revolving/charge accounts
+ You have established bank/national revolving credit obligations being reported

- The amount owed on your accounts is too high

but get this

The total amount owed on your credit obligations is $114 (note, some accounts may not be included in this calculation by design).

they say I owe too much but I owe a very low proportion to my total credit

and since when is $114 considered "high" amount owed

I bet 300 would be easier. I would start by getting as much credit as I can...cards, mortgage, car, etc. At that point my score would be decent. Then, all at the same time, I'd simply start exceeding all balances, not paying anything, all the while absolutely hammering the heck out of the thing with inquiries. Some tax liens would be a good idea along with a bankruptcy - but don't do the bankruptcy until the consumer loans have done as much damage as they can.

Realistically you would probably need the equations used to derive FICO scoes so that you could tweak your approach.

myfico.com is the most legit source of credit scores for consumers. This because myfico.com is actually owned by Fair, Isaac, and Co. Other credit score sources cannot always be trusted, not even the bureaus.

The minimum and maximum scores are 300 and 850, respectively. It has come to my attention that some consumer credit score sources, particularly TransUnion, use a different scale in order inflate scores.

478 is a terrible score. Unlendable. A common slang for sub-500 scores in the lending industry is "prison credit", because there is almost always some type of past or present legal action against the consumer on their bureau with that type of score.

For the most part, a "good" score is anything 680 and above. An "excellent" score is anything 720 and above.

LOL! Prison credit...if they do lend to you, they'll rape you in interest and fees.

I finally have gotten my score up to 685, after learning the hard way that you don't need everything when you turn 20. I wish my parents had taught me how to use credit responsibly, because the road back is a b!tch.

Even if you are down 30 (or let's say 40) points on the other 2 reports, you're still above 720 and have nothing to worry about. They vary some, but if one is showing 796, there's no doubt the rest are fairly close. I've never seen one really out of whack, especially once it's in the 750+ range.

WTF EVER! Do not listen to this guy. In order to get an accurate credit score, you need to get it from one of the three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian, or Trans Union. Better yet, go to Equifax and get their 3-in-1 report to make sure that someone doesn't have a report that the other two don't have.

Sigh, off yourself - please.
