Speaking from personal experience.

We ordered the Equifax "3 for 1" with credit score and I was a little disappointed.

So then we ordered MyFico.com's "3 for 1" with credit score and I was blown away at the difference and depth of detail. Also MyFico has coupon codes available, you just gotta know where to look :)

For the most part, a "good" score is anything 680 and above. An "excellent" score is anything 720 and above.

LOL! Prison credit...if they do lend to you, they'll rape you in interest and fees.

I finally have gotten my score up to 685, after learning the hard way that you don't need everything when you turn 20. I wish my parents had taught me how to use credit responsibly, because the road back is a b!tch.

Woah.. I just checked today and 685 is exactly my score right now :D
October 2004 I only had 629 score, that's when I bought my car and started making payment on time and sometime a lot more than the minimum payment.

Just checked last week, 796 IIRC. Yay for me.

It said something about balances too high on credit cards, but I owed 0. Go figure. Maybe because I have 3 cards with huge (for me, at least) credit limits?

Hmm... the way I look at it, if someone lends you money, and you don't pay them back, who's raping who, eh? ;)

Nope. Once you get more history (having your cards open for 7+ years) you're number will go up. That's why they say not to cancel old cards just to cancel them, because then you lose your history. You want to cancel newer cards if you are going to cancel any.

I got mine when I was 24. I had a few cards all with modest debt. (Very small compared to my annual income). Always made the payments on time or early. Always make more than the minimum.
Have never had a house or car loan. I got a score of 745 or so. Pretty good for someone with little experience.

Yeah...720 is considered GOOD.

I had 716 when I applied for my home loan and was able to get 5% interest. If I had those extra 4 points, it would have dropped my rate a little more.

Very unlikely.

My score was around 750 when I applied for my first home loan (last October). I got 4.25% with no points. (though it's an ARM, and only the Credit Union that deals with the company I work for was able to get me that rate. Also, I do have to pay PMI since this was a 0 down payment loan.)

4 years ago ----> 605
today ---> 770

Experian gives a possible range of 330-830.

The difference being that you got an ARM, which are always offered at initially lower rates (or else who would take one?). Also, interest rates change on a daily basis due to market influences. In fact, they're up over 0.375% over the past 2 weeks, and most likely heading higher.
I repeat, it's very unlikely those 4 credit score points cost him anything.
