How old are you? If you're a student, in addition to the bettercreditcard.com offerings (go for the student versions since it will be easier to obtain a line of credit from those companies), you also have the option for the mtvU card from Citi. It gives rewards as ThankYou points, but you get extra points from bookstores (Amazon.com counts as a bookstore), restaurants, record stores, and movie theaters.

I use a Chase Rewards Plus card with 5% gas/drugstore/supermarket rebate and an Costco Amex for when I eat out for 3% back. These cards are suicide to carry a balance on, as the interest rates are all at least prime + roughly 10%.

applied the other day. up to $600 cash back every year.

If you want a cash-back card, there are better choices. That card gives up to 1% cash back but you only get the 1% level after $10,000 of spending.
This didn't sound right to me (since I have that card as well), but you're right. You can still redeem your points before you get 10,000, but it's not at the 1% rate. You need to redeem 3500 points for a $25 check, 6000 for a $50, or 10,000 for a $100 check.

I love my Citi mastercard. 2 cents off per litre on gas, automatic. plus petro points.

That is Cdn only, but I can only assume they have an American equiv.
