What's a good CPU upgrade

I have had my trusty E6600 for almost 3yrs on 3motherboards if you can believe it, and I'm wondering if it's time for an upgrade? It's topped out @ 2.4GHz, and I've never been able to get it any faster. Any ideas?

I'm thinking it's time for me to go Quad. I have a GTX 295, 4GB PC2-8500, Vista64 so I'm all set for it. I'm sorry I missed the Dell $209 Q9650 deal by a few hours. I would have been all over that.:frown:

I have had my E6300 for like 3 years on 3 motherboards as well lol. If you do FS/FT like I do, maybe get a Phenom II and sell your current setup?

It's a lot cheaper than Intel right now...

Why? I just purchased the motherboard this past summer (last one died), and the socket 775 chips still have a decent lifespan left.

Quad should be your next upgrade. Something along the lines of a Q9400 or Q9550 would do nicely. You could probably get another good (up to) 3 years out of your machine with a Q9550, although this time it wouldn't make sense to upgrade motherboards needlessly since the Q9550 is basically the fastest processor you can stick in socket 775.

Isn't 2.4ghz stock? Your processor can't get above stock? That doesn't sound right -_-.

Oops. You're right. I meant 3.27GHz. I was looking at the wrong place. I'll wait for a deal to come around again and I'll jump on it.

Uh...what?

If you cant overclock, just drop in a quad. Make sure your board can handle the 45nm quads, and you are good to go. 9550/9650 would be nice.

Really your best bet is to find a hot deal on almost any intel quad. I was pissed when i saw the same CPU @ microcenter i have for half the price. ($199 vs $99) Dell had random good deals and FRYS has some awesome combo deals (like the ECS G31T that came with my cpu) so you can have a backup motherboard.

Personally, I wouldn't bother going from an E6600 to an E8500. If a game's running slow on a 3.27GHz E6600, odds are it'll benefit more from a quad than a higher clocked dual.

2.4ghz is pretty low. You should be able to OC that sucker little more than that. I was running mind e4300 at 3.1 until it crapped out on me. I say, mess with the timings once more and if you still can't get better performance go quad core. Q6600 are getting really cheap in the FS section.
