SimTower is old as balls but it's fun. I beat it once (100 floor tower + cathedral).

I never beat sim tower before. Can I download that off the internet for free? I gave it a shot but I don't know how to make money in that game; let alone sim city.

I bet you could find it somewhere.

I always got stuck because there was a certain number of floors you could go up to before you needed another lobby. I never knew you had to get another lobby, so i just stopped there.

Just build theatres, restaurants, and keep the guests happy. It gets harder when you have a bigger hotel, but its not impossible.

Simcity 4 is decent, but kind of buggy. Sometimes it likes to spontaneously terminate the process, especially in big cities.

If you get SC4, two things:
1) Get the Deluxe version. (Deluxe = Simcity4 + Rush Hour expansion pack) It makes several tweaks to the simulation engine and the specs of many structures, and adds some new transportation types.
2) Get the Prima strategy guide. The booklet that comes with the game is quite lacking. There's a LOT of useful information (and numerous typos) in the strategy guide.

You can make just one city if you want to, or to get the most out of it, fill an entire region with interconnected, interacting cities. You can buy and sell garbage, water, and power between neighbors. Residents in once city can take up jobs in another, provided you've placed some means of transportation between the two.

SC4: use one wind turbine. Start small, zone low density and Agriculture, or medium density industry. (Medium density industry will spawn dirty industry at the start, which puts out loads of air pollution.) In City Ordinances, enable the Smoke Detector one. This'll hopefully stave off your city's first fire for awhile. Fires can't be disabled, but only strike if a building is outside the protection of a fire department.

Here is my San Francisco region after many months of work

Wow very nice! Whats that black thing thats kind of in the middle of the water at the bottom right of the san fran map? Pollution isle?

To the OP, i would also say simcity 4 although i found it to be buggy and the way they work how the sims use mass transit sucked so i also recommend simcity 3000, it was pretty decent, fun, not really all that buggy. Simcity 2000 is great too but very simplistic and easy by todays standards.

Theres also "City Life" I dont know if its any good or not though.

Simcity 4 is by far the best. There is so much you can do in that game. There are some bugs that the developers never fixed (e.g. traffic routing) however there are simple player-made mods that correct them. When it first came out the average computer wasn't powerful enough to play it well, but with today's computers you can make huge cities that run great and don't slow down at all.

City Life is not really a "strategy" game. It is purely simulation.

If you like something more exotic, there's Immortal Cities:Children of the Nile, is made by the developers who are developing SimCity Societies. It's set in Ancient Egypt throughout the span of Egypt, as a sort of spiritual successor to Pharaoh.
The attraction is: "The first and only Strategy game to have people as a resource."
I played it, and it's pretty fun, I didn't buy it though...shame. It got an 80% from PCG UK, which is pretty tough on its ratings, especially back in 2004.
