As for the cheaper cases, I generally like stuff from Thermaltake, Coolermaster, and Antec.

For overall casitude, it's hard to beat the Antec SLK3000-B for ~$50. shipped. Other models in the Antec line and the Compucase line (6A19) are nearly identical and all have very good casitude for the money. Some of the Skyhawk aluminum server cases (MSR- series) that have been selling very reasonably lately (perhaps that is one linked above, and Newegg usually has one or two different models too) are nice but don't have much in the way of modern conveniences inside.

And some models in the Centurion and Cavalier lines of Coolermaster aren't bad. I've heard that geeks.com has had the CM Wavemaster at a wowza price recently - but the shipping'll kill you at the geeks.

A step up is the Kingwin 424 and variants of that case are sold under the Beantech and Victor names which I've found on computergate.com on occasion. These are always on my short list.

For a first build, I'd say that quality construction & lots of room inside to work with are the most important things so whichever brand you go with, I strongly suggest a full tower case if you have the room for it... nothing beats keeping the optical & HD's completely out of the motherboard area. As for brands, your idea of Lian Li is a good one, but to save some money & get a good quality power supply included you might want to go with Antec instead, again look for a full tower & at least a 480 watt psu.
