We are in the process of inventory'ing our PCs.

We currently have 120 or so PCs around the campus's with ID tags on them, that we put. On these tags there is a bar code as well, is there a somewhat cheap bar code reader that we can enter information into the bar code reader such as , OS, Service Tag, and little things like this.

We would also like it to export in an excel document so it is easily change if we need to, USB interface for that would work great.

I heard WAPT and Symbol are pretty good, but we dont need something so complex, just a scanner and a way to input information on the scanner.

Also, does it matter how long our barcode is ? It is about 1.5-2 inches long.

Most barcode readers will beable to dump the data ouit in a Ascii text format. From their you can manipulate it any way you choose.

The ones that I had used 10 years ago used a serial interface; I would expect that a little use of google will find some that have USB interfaces also.
