Wells Fargo is fine. Unfortunately, Norwest was better, but Wells Fargo bought them out a few years ago. I opened my Norwest account 10 years ago though, and I don't feel like moving it. I fear that nobody else will be any better anyway.

How easy is it to get into a credit union and why are they considered better?

Credit Unions are considered better because they are owned by the members and are local instead of huge corporate banks. CU's tend to offer better customer service, are more likely to approve a new loan and most importantly they have some of the best interest rates out there.

The downside is most CU's don't offer membership to just anyone. There's a CU here in downtown Portland, OR which says it's only stipulation is that you work in the downtown area and that's it.

Thanks RossMAN. Something for me to remember once I get a SSN! :)

You're quite welcome MrsSkoorb. I would definitely check into opening an account with a local credit union after getting your SSN. Perhaps Skoorbie's employer has a relationship with one?

In total agreement with Ross.

Both my accounts are with local CU's.
