I'm currently at Bank of America, but I got charged an excess transcation fee with only making 5 transactions in the month, and the fee was the same price as the monthly service charge. All I really need is a checking account with use of the check card as I hate writing checks, some good service, and no bs excess transaction fees. Any ideas?

i have two savings accounts with Comerica. I like them...and there are plenty of branches with ATMs to avoid that third party ATM charge. As for checking, my parents use them, purchase their checks through a third party, and seem to not have any problems with them.

INGDirect.com which is an internet bank (no physical branches). They are FDIC insured just like Bank of America so your money is safe. They are currently offering a free $50 bonus for opening a new account, they offer checking, savings, CD's, loans, etc. Look at their interest rates, they're awesome.

Otherwise check out Netbank.com or a local credit union.

If you want a B&M bank, have you tried Washington Mutual? Service isn't the best, ATMs can be a little hard to find, but their no-fee checking accounts actually don't have any fees. :Q ;)

Another vote for washington mutual. I've been with them for years with free checking and almost never pay any monthly fees, including atm fees.

Try a local credit union. Usually no fees for checking account, and rates are usually good.

<--likes his local credit union.

since you're on the west coast, I'll say wells fargo. unless you want to open up a brokerage account. then use that bank.

The bigger the bank is, the more they charge. The only advantage is the large ATM network for that bank.

Therefore, you should have accounts in a larget bank and a credit union and dump rest of your money in some sort of funds as your life saving.

Sounds to me like you may be using the wrong BofA account for your needs. I have an account with them and don't pay for anything other than using other ATM machines, but I don't really care about that because BofA's are EVERYWHERE here.

Bank of America has caused me many troubles from time to time, but i stick with them due to the sheer amount of banks they have down here in FL (they're on nearly EVERY corner)...

Four times they put a hold on my acct for making large computer parts purchases online, and couldnt reactivate my acct for 2-3 days. Even if i told them in advance of the purchase, they would do it. Other than that, no fees, so i like em... Security measures are good, when they dont inconvience you though...

I chose Bank of America, since in NorCal there are tons of local branches and ATMs. Now, I already have a savings account with them, and I just have to open a checking account.

Credit Unions are considered better because they are owned by the members and are local instead of huge corporate banks. CU's tend to offer better customer service, are more likely to approve a new loan and most importantly they have some of the best interest rates out there.

The downside is most CU's don't offer membership to just anyone. There's a CU here in downtown Portland, OR which says it's only stipulation is that you work in the downtown area and that's it.

I agree.

Also free with direct deposit, which is an option for most people. DD is more convenient IMO as well..
