what's a good audiobook from itunes?

I've decided to try an audiobook out. I travel in my car a lot and get bored with the radio and CDs. Any suggestions?

as long as the humor isn't offensive. I'd rather do without obscenity, sexual references, etc.

LOL - you *won't* like Carlin, then.

Good books I've read recently that I see are on iTunes:
* The Golden Compass
* The Subtle Knife
* The Amber Spyglass

Although, I confess I'm not a huge fan of the 'audio' version of them. It's an "audio drama"-type production - multiple people playing the various characters, and I don't usually go for that kind of thing.

Shockingly, "Lord of the Rings" isn't on it! The audiobook presentation of THAT (it's unabridged) is simply BREATHTAKING. Blows away the new movies and no mistake. OTOH, book 1 was 14 hours, book 2 was 13 hours, and book 3 was 12 hours, soo....I can see why it might not be on there.

HOWEVER....I see a good one:
* Master and Commander Book 1 (unabridged)

This book *so totally* kicks ass. The movie sucked, so don't just it by that (although it was very, very well cast, so if you've seen it, it's *easy* to envison the movie stars in the various roles in the book).

Most of the other books I've really been fond of lately don't seem to be listed, so...meh, start with those.

(Oh, a word of warning - if you are a fundie/uber-christian/religious zealout - you won't like the first three I recommended. One of the worlds is set in sort of an alternate reality version of the present day....sort of a 'steampunk' world...but with the Church run amok and in total power. The series does *not* portray "The Church" in a positive light, although, IIRC, they never name the organization, it's always just a nebulous religious organization that is manipulative. The first book in the series - "Golden Compass" won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Fiction Prize, however, it's been banned in many schools. So, that tells you it's good anyway: some people reward it, others burn it.

Oh, and in one of the worlds, people's "souls" are not in their bodies, but an animal that is bound to them. It's referred to the in the series as a "daemon", but pronounced "demon". So, if, listening to the book on tape, you hear them talking about all these demons...it's not "demons", it's "daemons", and it's their soul.)

I put one of the books you suggested dderidex on hold from the library. I listen to audiobooks on the way to work and such. This is the only thread that I came upon when I searched audiobooks so I think I will revive it.

I would like to put forth the suggestion of the best audiobook I have listened to so far. It is an abridged version but there is an unabridged. I can only vouch for the abridged version because the reader is very skilled in presenting the different characters.
Tell No One. I have also heard another book of his that is unabridged No Second Chance and it was very good as well.

I have heard some poor audiobooks. Heart of Darkness comes to mind. Some of the Starwars audiobooks are bearable. They have sound effects! 😛

Anyone have any more suggestions? I listen to about 14 hours of tape in a week so this series should take me 3 weeks to finish and I will need something else.

I just finished Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice and the story was okay but I wouldnt recommend the book for car rides. There is a LOT of sex in the book and more than once I had to turn off my player to avoid akward situations rofl.

LOL - yeah, ummm...that pretty much describes ALL Anne Rice books. Heh. I could never really handle any of them, actually. Too self-consumed characters, also.

Not a very good author, IMHO.

BTW - which did you put on hold? If the 'Golden Compass' series, you REALLY need to start from the beginning, or none will make any sense at all. No, really - NO sense at all. It's really one big story told in three parts. The order I have them listed is the order they go in.
