Scotch is always a good bet. Highland Park is my current favorite, so I'll recommend that.

Only if they like scotch, I never acquired a taste for it. In fact I can't stand it.

The safe bet is to find what they drink, and get that.

You said in the OP that you know what he likes. Just get him that & be satisfied that he's going to like what you got for him.

I think the same holds true with beer. I know people who drink only Bud Light, or Blue Light, or whatever type of beer. I could have a total of 2 cases of a variety of "good" beers in the fridge, and one bottle of Bud Light, and say "help yourself to whatever you want" - and they'll grab that Bud Light every time.
