my friend helped me out big time on something, so I want to get him something and I figure a bottle of alcohol would be the best bet. he is a big fan of Jameson, so I was thinking about getting that - but what's something nicer? Johnnie Walker?

I want to spend $100 or less. doesn't have to be whiskey. any ideas?

if not johnny walker, there is also some expensive bottle of cuervo out there. forget the exact name but i think it is around $100 a bottle or so, maybe more though.

anejo also has more expensive bottles of tequilla there is around that price range that come in some cool bottles.

Get him what you know he likes, you can even ask him. Just because somebody likes a lower end whiskey doesn't mean they'll like a nicer whiskey. People like certain brands for certain reasons and it might not scale.

Anyway, I've been seeing some gift packs that include 2 glasses and the bottle. I personally would get something like that (I would love a Makers Mark one, but that's just my taste).

Scotch is always a good bet. Highland Park is my current favorite, so I'll recommend that. :p

That's a solid scotch, and is unlikely to offend due to strong flavors. I'd also suggest a good Irish. Either Black Bush, or Red Breast.

If he likes Jameson then look for a bottle of Jameson 18 year. It'll be a smoother, more intimate sipper than the run of the mill $18 bottles of it he's used to drinking.

What does he like? Jameson is Irish Whiskey, so look in that category. Jameson 18 year should be right around $100 a bottle. Midleton Rare is a little more.

Depends on what he likes. If he likes tequila, many people enjoy Patron. Scotch is usually a good bet, a nice 18 year single malt like Glenlivet might be nice. I am a bourbon person myself and Maker's Mark is one of my favorites, so Maker's 46 is a nice option, many people I know also like Woodford Reserve. While I find it too sweet, many people that work in the service industry tend to enjoy Grand Marnier.

Agree with a lot of the above, a high end Irish would be the way to go.

18 year Jameson, Red Breast, Black Bush or Bush single malt, Knappogue castle...

Try Rumple Minz or Maniswivits Cream Peach.

In order of price:

Johnnie Walker Red
Johnnie Walker Black
Johnnie Walker Green
Johnnie Walker Gold
Johnnie Walker Blue

HOWEVER, its generally agreed Green tastes better than Blue, and many folks prefer Gold to Blue. Theres also Platinum and Double Black, which are hard to find, so forget about them.

For tequila's Don Julio 1942 is great ($125) and Don Julio anejo ($60) is good as well. Many people who hate tequila have tried both and go "I actually like that."

Most people have experience with Jose (dyed silver type tequila that isn't even 100% agave) or Patron silver (entirely marketing and sucks as tequila as many silvers do). If you want a good bottle of tequila get El Charro ($20) Cazadores ($40) 1800 ($30) Avion ($50ish) or Don Julio ($60) anejo's. If you want tequila that is akin to scotch/whiskey then Don Julio 1942 extra anejo is where it's at.

That times 1000.

Do not just default to Scotch, many people dislike Scotch and most people who claim to like it are poseurs who will only drink a specific label. And if he likes Jameson's, for gods sake definitely don't buy him Scotch. Other than coming from the same general geographical area Scotch and Irish whiskey have little in common and taste nothing alike.

Crown Royal because you get that cool purple bag you can use to hold your marbles after. It's like two gifts in one.
