whats a fat guy to do

I need to lose weight.

I'm motivated right now, i just need direction.

I've been....well....husky all my life.
Graduated high school at 225, muscular, but with a 'spare tire'
During college i got down to 195 with my hellaciously physical summer job.

Turning 21 and landing a sweet office job has done very bad things.
I stopped drinking (heavily) years ago, but I never stopped gaining weight.
I'm now around 320 :(

I have very busy life: a full time job, a home-based business, two kids (8 and 8months).
I don't have a whole lot of free time, but i can muster up at least 30 minutes a day for exercise.

I want to do it.
I know i need to change my diet, and i want to do that too.

I want to buy a piece of exercise equipment to help (plus if i spend a bunch of money, it will help me stay motivated)

What should i buy to exercise? I was thinking of a eliptical trainer, would that be good?
Any tips for what to eat and what type of exercise routine/schedule i should do?

I know i'm opening myself up for a lot of teasing...but right now i don't care.
I want to be healthy, and be there for my kids when they grow up.

Please help

Get a bicycle or a swimming pool, and you shouldn't have a problem burning 1000 calories an hour.

I've always heard diet is the biggest issue with losing weight. Running would also be a huge help.

Kiss soda, fried food, salty food, red meat and anything you might even cosider *not* healthly goodbye....for good. I'd suggest alot of baked skinless chicken, fish, fruit and vegetables.

I'm also in the process of un-f*cking my diet, I've almost completely dropped soda, which is HUGE for me. I went from being a state track champion to a lazy bum, I hate it. I'll be damed if it's going to continue. I will be fit again! Good luck man.

Get one of these
They're easy on the knees and are quite challenging. They don't work the upper body very hard though. I know a few oversized people who've lost weight using these (4 family members)

I think that's a good idea. But find a buddy near you. Someone who might share your motivation. What it comes down to is exercise though. Getting your metabolism up. Change the way you eat slowly. Overtime. Don't do the sudden change as far as eating habits go.

Drink water instead of sodas ( even diet drinks ). Look into expensive places like Jenny Craig if you can afford it and if trying to change the way you eat is not working. But in reality you will need to exercise regularly. Cardio type exercise. Don't over do it and burn yourself out. Try that's the main thing.

Good Luck

REPOST!:p

Water: hugely important, at least a gallon a day.

Diet: Count calories. Learn what a serving is supposed to look like on a plate. First thing to eliminate is all forms of sugar water. Increase lean protein and fiber to stay full longer. Do your eating and snacking at the table.

Exercise: low impact (biking, swimming, walking, weights, etc). A running program at 320 lbs is almost certainly a really bad idea.

Keeping the motivation is the hardest part.

Need some info here... don't most people who lose weight, tend to gain it back unless they continue exercising and eating right for the rest of their lives? If that's true, go for surgery of some sort.

It's a lifestyle change, but one that everyone should make...

Because of your weight, purchasing equipment is not recommended. Most equipment sold through TV or your local Sears is rated for people less than 250 lbs. A public gym or the Y is better. If you are having medical problems due to weight you need to seriously consult a physician before starting an excercise program. You can literally die from excercise if your body is not capable of the strain.
I was once over 550 lbs. I am now 287 and still losing. I however had a gastric bypass to save my life because of heart and diabetes complications. So my motivation was life threatening.
Changing the way you eat is no easy task. It takes a lot of will power. Drugs are absolutely not an answer to this problem. Over the counter meds and the TV stuff is worthless. Losing weight takes a drastic life-style change and a real desire to stay that way. If you are experienceing health issues due to your weight you might want to consider a surgical procedure. However, I don't know if you would fit the criteria for the procedure. You need a BMI of at least 40 to qualify for the surgery that an insurance company would pay for. Otherwise it is considered cosmetic and it's your dime.

As a side note. If you are healthy and are concerned only because of outside pressure or a stigma attached to obese people don't stress over it. There are many healthy people at your weight who have no trouble at all. In the end it's how you perceive yourself. Weight is a serious issue but only if it is causing health problems. If not, get active, watch your intake and enjoy life. It's too short to worry about.

Yes, your fat cells don't just vanish when you burn fat, they "deflate".

Elliptical is a GREAT idea, especially since you are overweight (jogging would not be good for your joints). Use a program like fitday to figure out how many calories a day you are eating/drinking, then reduce that. Avoid sweetened drinks, fried foods, etc. Just making a few small changes should yield notable difference at first :)

move to a bad ghettho neighborhood, u'll burn off tons of calories from nervousness and walking fast
this is from personal experience

Got the wife's approval for a eliptical.

Purchased tons of dieters food today (and grilled the 2 porterhouses that she bought yesterday)

I'll be shopping for elipticals, the nordictrack ones look great - any other good brands?
