Whats a Farad Capacitor?

stores energy for your car audio system... basically allows for less diming of your lights while playing your music.

it has something to do with circuit boards. short term storage of electricity or something. i don't remember high school physics.

a farad is just a measure of the energy storage capacity of the capacitor.. lol.

a 1 farad capacitor would be big, indeed. 🙂

Physics? Capacitors?

/methinks you've got your subjects mixed up. 😉

farad is a unit of measure,
hang on let me actually us google/dictionary

One entry found for farad.

Main Entry: far·ad
Pronunciation: 'far-"ad, 'far-&d
Function: noun
Etymology: Michael Faraday
Date: 1873
: the unit of capacitance equal to the capacitance of a capacitor between whose plates there appears a potential of one volt when it is charged by one coulomb of electricity

holds a volt

yay

It's not uncommon for people to use 1 farad caps in their car audio system. 🙂

actually, no. in my physics 2 AP class we spent a whole semester on electricity. the book we used was a college physics text book so i'm pretty sure my subjects are fine 🙂

we talked about capacitors in physics, had a lab about it, phsyics also deals with electricty, magnatism and a bunch of other stuff.

yes it was a fun course. my teacher was the former head of the physics department in some big university in australia. he is a real genious.

Yeah, I know... and they're big fsckers.. at least compared to the 1500uF(milli-farad) caps we see. 🙂

And it doesen't just mean it holds "a volt".. lol.. Theres a very wide range.. It's a tradeoff. Either it holds a lot of juice at a low voltage, or a smaller ammount of juice at a higher voltage.

Capacitors are largely taught about in physics electricity & magnetism sections.

In terms of car audio, you can use it to stabilize the 12 volt line. There will be fewer spikes, etc. Also, if your battery doesn't have enough juice for a particularly low note or something, the cap will take care of it. I have a 1 farad cap for my car stereo. Discharging it with a screwdriver is kind of cool.

HAHHA 🙂 Can you belive doc was sitting on the toilet when he came up with that!

Howmuch do these capacitors go for?

You know there actually is a real capacitor called a flux capacitor but you can't use it to travel through time LOL <<snorts like a geek>>

If you carry a charged one in your pocket at all times, not only will you be well equipped with a safety device, but everybody will wonder and gaze at the big bulge in your pants.

uF = micro farad = 1/1000 mf (milli farad).

Physics and capacitors go together like crazy. There are labs in university level physics courses where you find the harmonic frequency of an AC electrical system with an AC source, an inductor, a capacitor, and a resistor. It's a standard thing. E&M is a full 3rd year level physics course too.

I think you mean microfarad.

Discharging it with a screwdriver?!??! :Q
