What's a fair price to pay for a snowboard, boots and bindings?

I'm trying to find my fiance a good snowboard, boots and bindings so we won't be ripped off by $$$ rental fees this season. I paid $150 for a 1-year-old board with boots and bindings, but that was a really good deal and I'm not sure I can find the same that would fit a male 5'11", 175 lbs, size 13 feet. How much should I expect to pay for a 1-3 year old package? Did anyone buy their gear new, and if so how much did that cost?
 
I'm going to try to buy snowboard gear today (whether new or used). I've been researching and so far, boards cost up to $399 new. Then you have to get your boots and bindings -- probably another $200+

I definitely want to get it used, or "previous seasons" selections as they're somewhat discounted.

 
you probably missed out on last years equipment already... 🙁 but there's a shop by the 2 and the 210 called Billy's Board Shop... they might be able to hook you up. they sold my friend her setup for about $200. I don't know their number but you can 411 it. 😛
 
That $150 deal for your gear was definitely a good buy. If you have any "Snowboard/Ski" expos around your place, I'd suggest going to them. I'm actually going to Ski Dazzle this afternoon.

i depends on what your looking for. for lower-entry level i've heard good things about Lamar, i think you could get a combo for 200 or so. for Ride or burton you could easily spend two or three times that. don't skimp on the boots make sure you get a pair that fit well are comfortable and don't give too much.

edit- o and at minimum i'd look for 158 or taller and he's going to need a wide which is a little harder to find but not alot. and boots he's probably going to wan't something with a low profile so it's not huge. and an adjustable toe ramp on the bindings would be nice but that doesn't start showing up until you get higher up the price scale.
 
dood, it depends on what kind of equipment. you might buy a high end (read: overpriced) burton that's a year old and still pay more than a new entry level board. same goes for boots and bindings.

i would never buy used snowboarding equipment, but i guess that's only because i'd use it enough for it to be worth the money. in your case though, i'd still suggest getting new boots. you want something that fits well and molds to your feet as you ride.

It's tough to buy a board unless you know what you want. I mean, it's best to testdrive the board to find out if it rides nice. There are two primary bases on boards these days.....Extruded Bases and Sintered Bases. If you get a board with a Sintered Base, it will last longer, but cost a little more. If you pay a little for a board, you probably won't be able to tell a diff if you're just learning, but then again....if you get a good board, it will probably help your handling while you're learning and keep you from catching an edge in the ice and busting your butt...

I got my Burton from eBay for $180 2 years ago. It would have been $300-500 in the shops... You can get cheaper brands, but most will have extruded bases. Try to get something that is the right length for you and the right width for your feet...I wear a size 14 shoe, so I have to keep things like that in mind. Good luck.
 
One more thing about bindings.... I have both step-in and free style. I recommend the step-ins if you can afford them. It makes it a lot easier when you get off the lift at the top of the slope....you don't have to sit to strap in or bend over. It's something I'm definitely happy to pay for when I'm up there for a full day.
 
good gosh, size 13 feet and only 5'-10" tall? You might need a wide board for that. At 175 lbs, id say anything between a 154 to 163 could work well, however, wide boards only come in certain sizes. I use a 154 regular width (im 5'-10" 150lbs and size 10 feet).

Check your local Big5, they carry Lamar which makes decent boards, as well as Limited.
 
i wouldn't worry about Extruded Bases and Sintered Bases since everything under 300-400 is going to be extruded and thats for the board alone. sintered needs a bit more upkeep so unless your realy good the slight increase in speed probably isn't going to be worth the extra money and waxing.
 
i agree with theNEOone that he should not buy used boots. The previous owner probably put their foot grooves all over it so it might make it harder for your fiance to get accustomed to it. Or pick up a weird foot fungus :disgust:

in addition to checking big5, you might want to check out sportmart, they have pretty cheap equipment, might not be the best, but worth a look.

best deals on new equipment would to look for last seasons models if they still have them in stock.
 
i was considering selling my mistral escape (several years old, but in pristine condition...) with boots and bindings for $200...

just figured that might help with the equation.

Most $300 boards have sintered base.
extruded is like under $200 bucks.

Unless he's boarded before, I'd get a cheap package from a local ski/board shop with boots and bindings.

buying boots, you should usually get 1 size smaller than regular shoe size, cuz it needs to be snug fit.
Binding size = large
and as someone recommended, he probably needs a wide board.
 
Forget about buying used stuff.
You can easily find complete setups from last year for $250-$300.
You know, not the cheap kind or the high end stuff but good enough for normal boarders out there.

I got my complete setup from Garth Sports when I vacationed in Colo for $250+tax.
It has served me well for 4yrs now.
I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

Oh, please don't buy the step-in as someone suggested.
You will rarely find an advance boader riding step-in.

I suggest you buy your boots in person.
Thats the most important part of the setup making sure it fit your feet.

something inbetween will cost somewhere inbetween.
 
200-300 board
70-100 boots
50-150 bindings

I don't know... it really depends on how serious you are. I go up all the time so I only accept top gear. I can't stand crappy bindings or poor boots. Those combo deals are often a load of crap and I highly reccommend putting together a nice setup. I wasted a lot of money on a cheap setup when I could have saved it more for the salomon sequence/solly SP3 bindings/rossignol ultimate boots I have now.

Well, 5'11" and almost 6' but he rounds down. Big feet, his brother has them too. 😛

Thanks for all the tips, sounds like he's going to need a wide board... I'll check out BBB, B5 and SkiDazzle.
