What's a fair cash gift amount for a high school grad?

Not a relative, but I'm an acquaintance of his family so I'm invited to his grad party.

What do you think is a good amount for a cash gift?
 
It depends on what you think is a reasonable amount for a gift. Frankly, socio-economic class has a lot to do with it as well. I know where I grew up, a $100 gift like Toonces suggested would have been equivalent to winning the lottery.
 
I think $20 would be nice... maybe instead, a gift card to a place that has something he can use when he starts college (assumption) like walmart, target, whatever.

Although maybe sniperruff was correct about $50 being the new minimum (in some circles), while, hey, maybe $100 in others.

I like $40, unless you've had some special connection with him. <shrug>

 
Personally I would get him a gift card to B&N. You get bonus points from his parents. Don't give cash, you're not in the mob.

Even though cash is 'more useful', it paints the picture that you didn't try or give it any forethought. A giftcard shows you at least went out of your way to pick a place you'd think they'd shop at and get one. I agree with whoever suggested Barnes and Noble. Actually many college bookstores (including mine) can accept B&N giftcards.

Perhaps to the parents. Ask yourself which you'd prefer if you were a kid, though. Just get a really funny greeting card made for putting cash in, with the joke involving the cash. That'll will look at least as "caring" to the parents, and the kid will get exactly what they'd prefer, a quick yuck and some cold, hard cash.
