Whats a decent budget printer i could buy?

my girlfriend (i know i know...some computer nerds DO have girls 😉) is constantly having to print off her sisters computer and its just a big hassle that could be avoided if she had her own printer. so, ive decided that i should get her a nice budget printer for christmas. the printer MUST be from newegg, as i am paying with paypal(unless you can recommend other sites that take paypal). Id like this to be as cheap as possible, deffinately under 75-80. as cheap as possible, yet i would like it to be a decent printer with a couple options. any recomendations?

oh, and no pics. 😛
 
If she just prints text, check the newegg price on Samsung lasers. Black & white but much cheaper per page and toner never dries out.

hmmm i think she might need a color printer. she prints some occaional colored things for school.
 
Be careful about choosing a budget printer as in the past they have shown a tendency to cost much more in ink usage than some of the slightly more expensive models.

If i were you I'd do some research on the "cost per page" for whatever printer you are looking at. Most given the fact you (or her) are likely to spend more than the initial cost of the printer in ink replacement over its lifetime.

A simple google search using: "Printer name" & cost per page should help point you in the right direction.

If I were you I would still consider a B&W laser. They cost slightly more, but the toner lasts much, MUCH longer. Consider that ink cartridges are a huge scam, and that while an average toner cart costs more than an average ink cart...it also will last like 25 times as long. Plus, I just find laser printers to be much more robust than the throwaway cheapos you usually get.

If she only occasionally prints color...I'd just let her print it as school or her sisters.

can you guys give me some advantages and disadvantages for these 2 printers? is there anything else in this price range at newegg that i should be considering? thanks a lot guys.
 
the pixma 3000 uses 5 colors, ( BCI-3eBk/ BCI-6Bk/ BCI-6M/ BCI-6Y/ BCI-6C)

one of which is a dedicated photo black, so it uses a different black for photos and text, the inks on the 3000 can be purchased seperatly, the 1500 has one of thoes 3 color tanks and the 3000 can do duplex printing )print on both sides of the page)

get the 3000

Yeah, like the dell el'cheapo is around 30 dollars and the ink is about 35 dollars!!! :thumbsdown:

You can buy ink for the 1500 (only 2 ink carts) for a $1 each.

i think ive decided on the 3000. now 1 more n00b question...does the printer come with ink and a toner? i just want to make sure this printer comes with everything she will need to print right out of the box. i dont want to buy her a gift that requires her to go out and spend $30 on ink 😱

it comes with ink, inkjet sprinters do not use toner so no it does not have that 😛

it most likely DOES NOT, come with a printer cable, you will need to get one of thoes

in the pictures i only see the power cable,

i ordere a i860 and i960 from newegg neither came with a printer cable
 
The iP3000 is at newegg for $59. before shipping that's where the $60. comes from. I agree that the iP1500 is also a good printer for the money and is currently in 2nd place on PC World's Top Ten General Purpose printer list (largely due to its low price). It's ink tanks are the small BCI-24 series, so I would only recommend it for those that don't print a lot (unless you don't mind swapping them out frequently). As another mentioned, the 3rd-party ink tanks for that are VERY CHEAP! I had an i450 (basically the same printer as the iP1500) before my iP3000 and its output was amazing for the price. And to clear up another mistake from other posts: The iP3000 holds 4 ink tanks: 3e, 6M, 6Y, 6C. It cannot use the 6BK - that is an error on Canon's web site. The iP 4000 takes 5 tanks: 3e, 6bk, 6M, 6Y and 6C. It uses one black or the other based on the type of printing you are doing. The iP6000D takes six tanks (no 3e on that one) and is best if you are mainly doing photo printing. I would have bought the iP4000 (as I consider it the most flexible of the bunch) but the iP3000 was just too good of a deal when I bought it. A full set of very good 3rd party tanks for it is only $11. shipped.
. And all Canon printers are shipped with a full set of full-sized ink tanks - none of that HP "starter cartridge" crap. :frown: ..

Most ink jet printers don't include a cable in a tacit agreement with the big-box retailers. Since they really can't make much profit on the printers themselves, they make it up with $20.+ Belkin cables :shocked: and a high markup on the ink refills.

I must be crazy, b/c everyone thinks of having seperate color ink carts is a big plus, since you don't waste the remaining ink of two colors when one runs out. I've had both seperate and tri-color printers, and i've found the color ink runs out fairly close together (for me anyway). Therefore, i end up buying the 3 ink tanks all together anyway. Bottom line, instead of getting a generic tricolor for say $8, i have to buy 3 seperate colors at $5 each. If the ip3000 had the tricolor, i would've picked one up already, but since it doesn't, i've passed. I wish the IP2000 didn't cost MORE than the 3000, sigh.
 
3rd party tanks for the iP3000 cost $3. each (black or color) and last at least twice as long as the BCI-24 tri-color tanks. I think they are a bargain in the long run. Considering the atypical group here where Red and/or yellow would probably run out well before the other colors (Now why would that be, hmmm 😉 ) there can be considerable savings with separate color tanks.

. Why would one pay $12. PLUS shipping on tylermartin.com for a set of tanks for the i560/iP3000 when one can buy the same set of tanks for $11. shipped on eBay (USAinkjet store - an alias for Tyler-Martin)???
