It can also play hell with your kindneys.

My mom has to make sure to get big bold print on everything if she goes to the hospital NOT to give her any form of Tylenol. It's a pain in the a** becuase that is a doctors cure for a million things right now.

If they do her kidneys shut down and stop working.

Not enjoyable to be around.

the MD prescribed 3,200MB of ibuprofin - daily - for pain associated with my herniated neck disk. :p

it's "ok" for a very limited period . . . after that you you get to enjoy [your own] fried liver and kidneys

I took 13 acetaminophen sleeping aid of 500mg in one hour. I am very healthy and high metabolism. Should I be fine if this was the only overdose I’ve ever had

Welcome!

Consult a medical doctor about your health concerns,
not random strangers on the internet.
However, this thread you responded to was last active
12 years ago, and the doctor of interwebtz says
that is far too old to revive. ;)

Please start a new thread if
you feel the need.

The absolute smartest course of action is to ask for advice on ATOT.

Why the very idea of calling a doctor, pharmacist or perhaps even poison-control for verifiable accurate information would just be silly.

Edit: Dam necro got me again !!!

I've heard that if Tylenol were developed today it would never get approval from the FDA. It's just too dangerous!

To our necromancer, you should have a doctor check your liver function sometime. It's easier to revive a thread than a person.

The manufacturer recommendation dropped from 4gm to 3gm total in a day. Really, there are 2 things to consider:

1. hepatotoxicity happening above the recommended dose range (or within depending on chronicity of use, alcohol consumption, etc.) causing mild liver damage over time

2. fulminant hepatic failure from overdose. I can't (quickly) find data on how much might be required to experience this. Clinically, someone presenting with OD will get blood levels checked, and there is a tool called the Rumack-Matthew monogram which guides clinical risk for developing toxcitiy

Incidentally, don't overdose on Tylenol. If you are successful in causing fulminant hepatic failure, it will take several days to die and will be agony. I had one patient who took a bottle of tylenol reacting to a bad life situation but didn't really want to die. After a couple of days, her liver started failing, she became very delirious, and she ended up dying.

I remember reading that a single dose of 6000mg could be fatal for a 100lb person. Reading about the way the liver has to metabolize acetaminophen has deterred me from overusing it, indeed I won't use it at all if I've had alcohol.

Shaun,

The number of the poison control center is 1-800-222-1222. They are the ones to ask.
