Whats a dangerous dose of Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

I was talking to a buddy of mine who just had a root canal and got him some hydrocodone Acetaminophen (Lortab). Anyways, he said he was really hurting so he took 3 pills (22.5mg of hydrocodone and 1500mg of Acetaminophen). That much acetaminopen can't be good, any idea if his liver is going to be fuxxor?

Taken for a few days, your friend will be fine illusion88 🙂

I think 1500 is a prescription value to be taken once every four hours... but only under doctor supervision. I mean, that could KILL your liver, so a doctor is going to want to decide if it's really a good idea or not.

I don't think its good actually. I got my wisdom teeth out and was given lortab. For fun a friend of mine took three, since I never needed any of em. He ended up feeling sick and throwing up.

Its not a fatal dose, at least not to anyone of a decent size, but its definately enough to make one a bit ill.

there was a big thread about this a year or two ago, that isn't too much. but taking extra doesn't help like it does with ibuprophen

Take it easy on the acetaminophen. It's hell on your liver in high doses. Tell him to phone his doctor (or do it for him if he's not able to) and ask if the dose is ok, and to get better pain meds if nec.

I think it isn't a 'fatal' dosage : tylenol is supposed to be pretty gentle and can be taken in dosages that high.

I think the recommended dosage is less then most normal people use anyway.

Ibelieve they dont recommend over 3000mg ever 24hr

Close. It's 4000 mg

yup, though if your a drinker you don't want to go anywhere near 4g. And if you're in such pain that you need to take that much, visit the Dr for some "better" stuff 😉

bah, a dose like that won't harm your liver... now, if he's taking that multiple doses for a couple of weeks, then yes, he should worry.

I'm not a medical expert, but I do believe that his physical health and his size have a good amount in determining your answer.

If he's an average size guy with average habits, he'll be fine. Similar to alchol, having one big night of drinking won't hurt a person. It's the long term effects that change things. But be careful, because one REALLY big night of drinking can be enough that your body can't keep up with.

but yeah, your friend should be fine as long as he's still following the precautions of the drug (no alcohol, taking with/without food, liquids.)

well I wasnt worried about him ODing and dieing, I just thought 1500mg in one shot wasnt too nice on the liver.

The med is only for pain as needed, so I figured it was a higher dose then something that was to be taken cronicaly over a period of time.

Thanks for all the info folks.

Dont take more than 4000mg in a day if you're a regular person.

Dont take more than 3000mg in a day if youre a heavy drinker, dont take more than 2000mg if youve got any type of liver dysfunction(you should probably see your doc anyway for something else).

No, its fine. Take 50-100 and you might feel some effects though. Three is nothing...

On a side note, the thing with Tylenol is that it doesnt kill in overdose situations, because its nearly impossible to OD on it. Your stomach would fill up before you OD. However, after about 6 hours you will violently eject the contents of your stomach, and 6 months down the rode the liver problems will start to show up because you basically disolved your liver. Its a slow painful death after that point if its bad enough.

the limit as far as we go in the pharmacy is a 6gram a day (6000mg) and thats for someone not a habitual drinker
as long as he doesn't repeat that every 4 hours, no problems

One Extra Strength Tylenol is 500mg. I've been taking 3 at a time for headaches for the past 12 years...my liver's fine...I think 😉 😛
