what's a cool spaceship game for PC?

I've had a craving to play a fun shoot-em-up spaceship game. It's been awhile. I like the first or third person 3D ones where you can use a joystick and fly around and shoot stuff. I'm not a big fan of realistic simulators and I don't want a galaga-style top view/2D game. X2 looks pretty cool but it looks like its not just flying around, there's trading and all that. Any suggestions?

haha

even a good airplane game would be nice. warbirds III looks pretty neat!

Descent: Freespace 1 or 2, though 2 will have a better chance at running on a newer system. Either game is absolutely excellent, and was overlooked because Wing Commander overshadowed it in the PR department.

The Wing Commander games worth playing are so old that they're unplayable.... unless you have an older machine (and older OS) handy.

On top of that, Freespace 1 and 2 are both open-source now, and you can find several goodies and enhancements to the engine.

Freespace. Those system maps are almost TOO big.

I remember setting my course then like getting up and doing stuff. i dont mean run to get a drink either, I mean like getting up and doing stuff. Make something to drink, have a smoke, go to the movies etc etc.
The maps are frickin HUGE.

I really liked Privateer 2: The Darkening...runs on Windows 95/DOS.

There's an online multiplayer spacesim called Allegiance. Microsoft (I think) made it open source and now there's a whole community devoted to it.

Allegiance
