whats a catback

when i bought my salvaged 2001 altima, i had to have a catback, because it had been previously rear ended and the piping was screwed up (this was the only thing wrong with it, insurance write off). anyways, i took it to the best muffler shop in town, and they said i needed a catback and took out all the pipes and my muffler (nissan wanted $300 just for the part, so i got some supposedly quiet semi-performance muffler since they were a racing place, and well its a bit louder). anyways, i hear a catback makes your car get like 2-3 hp, so i dont know what they did to my car , but it seemed to be a little better. then again, the pipe was like crushed onto itself before so maybe that was bad.

A catback is refering to a muffler system of your car. THey replace everything from the the headers and back to your muffler canister.

And yes you gain about some HP because they are putting in a bigger diameter pipe. When you get a bigger pipe, you get more flow, more flow equals HP.

A cat back is an exhaust system. It means from the catyletic converts and back. So basically, besides the headers, you got a whole new exhaust system.

I just had the catback replaced on my '85 VW Golf .

It is not from the header back, it is from the cat back. You do not get a new cat. It is from the output side of the cat back. Which would be new pipes, 2nd res. (if you got got or want one) and muffler.

cars don't have headers either. They have exhaust manifolds

Of course, they are aftermarket.
