The 64bit Sempron is based on the Athlon 64 core, which is a clock for clock faster and more efficient architecture than the Althon XP, and while the sempron does have a smaller cache, in a majority of cases, the sempron will still outperform the Althon XP.

QFT.

Sempron 64 + 1GB RAM FTW in this two-horse race.

If the Sempron is a K8 which I'm 99% sure it is probably s754, you should go that route. A K8 Sempron would smoke an older Athlon XP.

Would a Sempron 64 bit processor be that?

The only thing I know is that it is a "64 bit Sempron 2600"

This thread has become so misleading. Allow me to clear it up for you. If you are certain that the Sempron 2600 is 64 bit model, then it will be a good deal faster than the Athlon XP 2400. The Sempron 64 runs on the next generation architecture while the Athlon XP is much older. Think of it as comparing a Pentium 2 to a Pentium 3. Who on Earth would get a Pentium 2 over a 3 if the 3 could have more ram and be cheaper at the same time? If you are certain that the Sempron is a 64 bit model, then there is absolutely no reason what so ever to not get it. A Sempron 64 2600+ with 1GB of ram is better than an Athlon XP 2400+ with 512MB in every single way.

The ONLY Sempron 64-bit version in a 2600+ speed rating came in the socket 754 flavor, not socket A and not socket 939.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sempron

The 64-bit socket 754 Sempron 2600+ it's a 1600 mhz part with 128k of L1 and 128k of L2 cache, integrated memory controller, SSE/SSE2/SSE3, MMX and 3DNow! instruction set support and full AMD64 support. You're going to see a loss in clockspeed (-400 mhz) and half the cache, but gain performance from a more efficient processor architecture, faster CPU-memory link (800 mhz hypertransport) and a much faster on-die memory controller.

I'm going to say the Sempron should at least equal the Athlon XP 2400 in terms of raw performance with some variances up and down depending on the app. The bigger factor here is the additional RAM - which should have a big impact in a box that is doing web, email, database and DHCP server functions.

OK they lied to me.

The sempron is ONLY a 32 bit processor.

So basically I'd be saving $5/month, and going to an Sempron 2600 from an Athlon 2400 XP but with more RAM.

I thinkI'm just going to stick with what I got.

I think everyone is a bit confused.

Post both plans "word for word" exactly. I think that would help greatly...
