I would say 8pm. My reasoning is that I would not have to wake up early to make the flight.
I hate waking up early, it sucks.

You will arrive in HI at 4pm local time. This gives you time to get dinner, get settled in your room and go to sleep getting quality sleep starting you on your way to adjusting to the 5 hour time change. You will wake up to your first day in HI refreshed and ready to start your vacation.

No one gets quality sleep on a plane.

With the 8PM flight, you will waste an entire day in HI being extremely tired and stiff since you flew the entire night.

What you say will work well for west coast flights, but he did say he has a total flight time (including lay-overs) of 15 hours...that will put him in Hawaii at either 6 or 7 p.m. depending on when he flies and whether his point of origin uses DST.

if it is easy to get to the airport at 6am (you have a ride) I'd go for this one. I dunno, but nighttime flights suck in my opinion.
