what's a better flight time: 8pm or 6am?

Are you in a rush to get where you are going?
I find morning flights to be better than evening flights since sleeping on a plane sucks.

8 PM.

1. You don't have to get up super early for the flight
2. You sleep on the plane.

Make sure your connection isn't the last flight of the night if you take the 8 p.m. flight.

Also, do they have the in-flight TV/movies on late flights? Last couple of times I flew back from Hawaii on a midnight flight, I don't think they did. So don't count on any entertainment for the second flight, and probably not for a portion of the first flight either.

yeah, that 2 AM transfer is really going to cut into your sleep. If you have a laptop and can be productive on the plane, I would take the 6 am flight, and by the time you land, you will still have the night to go out and enjoy.

I'd take the earlier one(not necessarily 6am)... what I mean is if the 8pm one is 8pm fri vs 6am sat, I'd take the 8pm flight... if it's 6am fri vs 8pm fri, I'd take the 6am flight.

Having flown from the west coast to Hawaii a number of times, I prefer the 6 a.m. flights. 5 hours of flight time, 2-3 hours by "local clock" time. (No daylight savings time in Hawaii) Even with an hour or 2 layover in Honolulu, I'm at my condo by about 3 p.m.. Still plenty of time to clean up and hit the beach, head for a nice restaurant, drink copious amounts of fruity-flavored rum drinks...

We've taken the "red-eye" home from the islands a couple of times. I don't sleep well on a plane, (which as bad as I snore...it's a good thing for the other passengers) so having decent in-flight movies is a good thing for me, they're USUALLY much less crowded, so you can often have all 3 seats in coach to spread out on to rest, it's much quieter (and darker) when playing games on the laptop. BUT, they usually get us into the SF Bay airports in time for the morning rush hour commute...for the 80+ mile drive home. Fortunately, MOST of that is counter-commute so traffic isn't too bad.

6AM

You will arrive in HI at 4pm local time. This gives you time to get dinner, get settled in your room and go to sleep getting quality sleep starting you on your way to adjusting to the 5 hour time change. You will wake up to your first day in HI refreshed and ready to start your vacation.

No one gets quality sleep on a plane.

With the 8PM flight, you will waste an entire day in HI being extremely tired and stiff since you flew the entire night.

6am. Too many opportunities for Murphy to screw you with the 8pm flight and have you spending the night in an airport.

6 AM. Morning departures are always nicer from my experiences... or rather, experience :p.

simple reason:
Delays occur more frequently as the day goes on.

Odd. I was talking to a destination company about two weeks ago and they said that night time flights are least likely to be delayed than morning flights. Their job is booking travel and things of this nature.

That doesn't make any sense to me.

The 6am flight is likely among the first wave to leave the airport. Meaning that the plane should be waiting at the gate overnight and you aren't waiting for it to come in, thus avoiding any delays that would push your flight back.

I'm just passing along what a travel company who does this for a living told me. Not sure what to tell you. They said you're more often to have delays on morning flights than evening flights. Also, 6AM isn't the only part of the morning. lol
