what're the best speakers for under or around $100?

I'm going to buy some speakers that are preferably under $100 because of a tight budget. Can someone please help me on what the best speakers would be? Thanks in advance.

It depends on what sound card you have and what you are looking for.

The Creative 6.1 speakers are selling for $99 at most retail stores.
If you want a 3-piece I would say get the Creative I-Trigue 2.1 speakers for $99.99. For something higher-end on a 3-piece get the Klipsh ProMedia 2.1 for about $179.99 retail.
I am sure you can find them lower on PriceWatch.com

In case you are wondering, my current speaker system is the Creative/Cambridge DTT2500 5.1 digital speakers. To ME, they sound very good. I was running an OEM Audigy sound card until it crapped out on me after a couple of years. Now I am going to be using an Audigy2. Sometime during Christmas I plan on purchasing the Creative/Cambridge MegaWorks 6.1 speaker system. It will be costly, but the the hell. 😎

EDIT: grammar

my sound card is a creative sb live!... the Creative I-Trigue 2.1 are 76$ at newegg and the logitech 640's are $65 both almost the same price.....when i'm comparing them, what should i look for? ...sorry i'm new at this. another question.....how much does 3 or 5 speakers really matter? what is the difference? I'm going to be using the speakers for listening to music not for gaming. thanks for the help.

i think people overhype the logitech z-640 too much...

i'd get the altec lansing 251 for the same price.. they have a much clearer range of frequencies... no muddy highs are boomy bass..

i'm confuseddd.....which one do i get? how do i know how one is better than the other? and if you could answer the questions on my previous message that'd be great. I"m looking for something that'll shake my house (if possible for this kind of money) and still have good sound.

Do they have a CompUSA, Best Buy or some big computer store where you live?
If so, just go in the store and crank it up.

If not, then for BIG sound I would say go with the Klipsh Pro Media 2.1 speakers. If the price is too much the 2nd choice should be the Creative I-Trigue 2.1 speakers.

I dont know about you guys, but i think there is a gap in the 5.1 range that needs to be filled. You have the high end for > $200 and the low end for < $75. I would like to see some speakers in the quality and price range of the Logitech Z560 4.1 THX speakers. If something in this class was available, id buy them in a heartbeat.

Not to dump on anyone in particular...but when it comes to speakers, lots of people read the spec sheets and buy for what the marketters tell them are the most impressive specs.

Seriously...stuff like the 400 watt klipsch promedias are a great example. 400 watt RMS by itself means nothing, but they sold thousands upon thousands of these systems on that alone. Without knowing SNR, efficiency, dynamic range, rolloff and many other things, simply knowing that you have a 400 watt amp is meaningless. I can point you at systems that are alot lower than 400watts that will decimate the promedias for both loudness and quality (although to be fair, the sets I'm thinking of will cost you more as well).

I recommend you check this place out: http://www.3dss.com/

These guys will give you the real goods on PC Sound systems. They also have a really really good forum for audio stuff as I recall.

If you are looking to place your speaker money well, you'd be advised to spend some time over there. There just aren't very many places that do really thorough speaker reviews that are any good, this however is one of the few.
