I love this demo, and I was just about to post this about the strand/hair comment.

First thing I ran when I got my 6800NU...ran like shit.

Looking at this screenshot after all these years though...makes me realize...if there ever was proof of the uncanny valley, this is it.
 
they had to do that in water because rendering it with gravity and making it look natural is the challenge.

That's how most tech demos are. I just ran this Leo Sneeze the Day Demo at 1280x1024 and I am dropping to 19 fps before he starts "filming" with averages barely at 28-30 fps on a 6970, with highest just 41 fps. The funny part is there aren't even that many moving objects and it hammers my videocard. It probably flies on GTX670/HD7970 though.

I don't think it's not because today's GPUs can't do it, but today's game engines are clearly designed with current consoles in mind. Until we see a game specifically built for modern GPUs (and a reason to render hair), we'll have to enjoy screenshots from 8 years ago.

What good would a high end next gen tech demo be useful for if it worked perfectly fine on older cards?
 
Considering it was on a PC in late summer 2004 rendering in real time I'd say it was done pretty well. I wonder how a 680 would handle it at 2560x1600?
