Hey!

Just gonna go out and build my own gaming rig - and have come up with this little spec. I can't afford full blown top of the range stuff - so would this fit together nice and give some good results:

AMD 2400+ XP Processor
512MB RAM (PC2700) (2x256)
Asus Nforce2 Motherboard (A7N28X)
Western Digital Cavier Special Edition HDD 100GB
ATI Radeon 9700
Soundblaster Audigy
PlexWriter 48r 48w 24rw CD Drive
Toshiba 16x DVD 48x DC-DVD Drive
Creative Inspire 5300 Speakers
Windows XP Pro

So what you think? Good/bad? Any thing you'd change?

That's pretty much what you've got. Looks like a very good system. Shoud last you quite a long time.

nice :)

Audigy + creative 5300's a nice combo, I can vouch for that ;) Buy The Matrix and/or Saving Private Ryan DVD's to show it off, the beach landing & "that" lobby scene... Single handedly made it worth it for me. I will say the absence of a headphone socket on the 5300's is a bit of a pain though, need headphones with long cord and some upplugging at the back of the machine if you like to play games when others like some quiet.

Dont forget case, psu & HSF. Sounds boring but can be £200, er, i guess about $250 for 'em (and obviously nothing works without :p)

Plexwriters last i was looking seem to be considered "the best", though there's Liteon if you want good at less price... doubt it'd be enough to up you to a 2600+ with the faster FSB though so :)

why are you getting the Audigy when you have the Nforce2?? the sound of the Nforce2 is excellent and i don't think there is any need to get the Audigy.

Surely the onboard sound can't be as good as a dedicated card (Audigy) can it? Or can it?!!

And would you downgrade on say DVD and upgrade to a 2600+ - would it be a MUCH better performance...?

I wouldn't b/c more than likely you will have that DVD player longer than you will have that cpu. Besides, you already have a great cpu. You should have a great dvd player too. :)

Yes it can, why don't you wait for Evan's nforce2 motherboard shootout, just to make sure?. Check out Videologic's Digitheater DTS, slightly expensive but it will go well with ur nforce2 sound.

Speaking of headphone jacks on speakers, can anybody tell me which set of 5.1 speakers in the same price range as the 5300's has a headphone socket built in?

Thx
