I like the idea of avoiding talking about movies, because it's likely to end up in a disagreement, however trivial or light-hearted. A disagreement over a more weighty, controversial topic is more likely to reveal who the person is. It has some value for both of you.

Don't talk about religion or politics? Bullshit. I won't talk about religion or politics (or the top five all-time NFL quarterbacks, or the best all-time NBA lineup) with a stranger in a bar, because I don't need to get into a heated argument while I'm just trying to kick back.
