What you need to know about USB 2.0

I have USB 2.0 and Firewire both... I am scared that if I splice the two ports together that the whole PC will explode as USB 2 and Firewire duke it out. 😀

<< 10. Can I simply plug in the device and use immediately?
USB 2.0 inherits the similar Plug-n-Play specifications of its predecessor, enabling you to easily connect peripherals and use immediately without configuring the hardware. It also provides hot-swapping capability (move from computer to computer).

sure, unless you're running windows (2k at least), where you often have to reboot after plugging in a usb device. lame. sorry for the rant, good find nfs4 🙂

Actually Win2K should not require the box to be rebooted at all when a USB device is plugged in. Are you running the latest Win2K service pack?

So having the 6 usb ports with my epox board is overkill considering I'll probably be buying card with usb 2.0 ports.

<< who uses USB anyway?😛

Firewire all the way baby! 😉

Whatever. Use Firewire for WHAT?

My USB devices:

Planar 18.1" LCD w/4 USB 1.1 ports
Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro w/2 USB 1.1 ports
USB 2.0 PCI card w/5 USB 2.0 ports
Gravis Xterminator Gamepad
Epson C60 Printer
Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse
CompactFlash/SmartMedia USB reader
USB Sync for my Audiovox Maestro PocketPC
HP Scanjet 3300C
USB Headset

WTF is Firewire gonna do for me? 😀

My PS2, Serial, & Parallel ports as well as my floppy controller are all disabled

thanks for uh... copying a whole article... i guess you're allowed since its almost like you own the place 😛

<< Whatever. Use Firewire for WHAT? >>

I see the bandwidth improvements, but what of power requirements? Is there still a 500mA power limitation per port?

I occassionally wonder whether, if Apple had been a little more reasonable on the early licensing of Firewire, there even would have been a USB 2.0.

I have USB 2.0 ports on my machine right now and I'm not sure what I would plug into them if I had the money to buy whatever I want. Nothing that I currently use is lacking for bandwidth expect possibly my CF cardreader - and I doubt it would be that much faster with USB 2.0 than it is with the original USB. Digital videocameras would be something, I guess, but I don't really need one. And I have removeable IDE HD's anyway, so external HD's won't do me any good.
