It seems like a no-brainer...Get the 1600+ for fraction of the cost and hopefully you can oc it to 2100-2200 levels like everyone else....

definitely go OEM and use the money to get a decent HSF in case you need to raise th vcore much to get what you want to obtain...

Are all of the XP1600+s overclockable?

Are there any OEMs that are locked?

Any reason i shouldn't go with an XP1700+ ?

All the chips will be locked so unless you unlock it the multiplier will not change and the oc will be pure fsb....

The 1600+ is being suggested cause we know that many like newegg are sellin gthe agoia which is proven around here to gain well in ocing...Also you want lower multiplier so you can insure yourself of reaching 166fsb. Many boatrds offer a 1/5 pci divider and thus if you can only go 160fsb you may be SOL cause the system may not like 40mhz pci speeds...ie 11x160=1760mhz but may be very unattainable in terms of stability in most systems...heck maybe not much above 150fsb may be stable with some pci cards and harddrives being very picky to pci speeds....11x166 may be pushing it in terms of reliability in getting to the magic 166fsb....take your chance and if it does not work try to unlock it and set the multiplier to whatever you want.

I'm sorry for not researching this more before posting because I'm in a rush to order a replacement CPU...

I have an Abit KG7-RAID with Crucial PC2100 DDR.

I do not know whether or not it has the 1/5 PCI divider but I know for a fact the system did NOT run stable at 11 x 146 or higher FSBs...

11 x 145 was what I ran w/ an AMD Athlon 1.4 - 1.70Vcore

I'm looking for an easy O/C solution - reliability and cost are factors - performance is the second factor.

I can get the 1700+ for the same $$ as a 1600+ and I have no interest in unlocking it using the conductive paint/pen method...

MP's are really fun!
Sure they cost more. But you just plug em in and start playing. No superglue or maginifying glasses or tape... just fun. ;)

Think your divider is 3:4, the Abit didn't have 1:2:5 divider until the KX7-333, as this was the function that matched the 166 ( PC2700 DDR @ 333 ) 2 x 166 = 333 setting,
1:2:5 divider put system AGP/PCI back to 33/66 range where they could run.

Yeah, I don't think you'll get much o/c'ing out of that combo. But regardless, the 1600+ cpu will do the best on a better mobo...
