I have a WRT54GL router and I'm looking for a way to speed up the connection since I cannot navigate the internet when bittorent is opened (even with few connections). I've read about HyperWRT and DD-WRT firmwares but I'm not sure it worths voidding the waranty. What do you think?

Hell yeah it is worth putting the firmware on. It won't void the warranty since you can just load the old firmware back on if need be.

I use DD-WRT and it is FAR better than the stock Linksys firmware.

I meant in case you brick the router....
Anyway I will try the DD-WRT, after all I bought this router for it's ability to work with different firmwares.
Thanks guys.

Well, if you brick it you can always buy a $5 EJTAG cable online and unbrick it.

Fortunately I managed to flash it, but not without problems. First I uploaded the mini DD-WRTversion and although it gave a upgrade succesfull I couldn't access the GUI. Only after a reset I could and upgraded it to standard.
I must admit I don't see any difference between DD-WRT and my old linux firmware. Maybe you guys have some ideas? It's dead slow when running bittorent. I've already maxed the ip connections and lowered the timeouts to 120. Is there anything else?
Thanks

I have two WRT54Gv4.

Under my load, it is working without a Hiccup.

Serious gamers know that you need a good expensive Video card, and you cannot solve 3D gaming need a $20 video card, and Miracle software.

Similarly, trying to over task the puny computer that Entry Level Routers are comprised of, is not a matter of firmware.

However, I do not do Multi Bittoret, with 3D gamng at the same time. I actully have very little interest in both.

Of course you're right. I got the impression from what I've read on other boards and sites that using the DD-WRT would speed up my network.
I did actualy made some changes in the bittorent client and router and it came out very good. It feels like the downloads aren't that fast, but we all have to make sacrifices :(. Any thoughts on QoS?

I have a WRT54GS and honestly never had a problem with the stock firmware. I tried a few of the 3rd party firmware types and never saw a need for them. I've never been a fan of the WRT54GS as this is my third one after the last two fried from my FTP server load.

Surely you must have noticed the shear increase in the options available over the stock firmware. They all do stuff too ... ;).

Alot of the options you have with 3rd party firmware are pertinent to your wireless network and giving you more control over your network (of course amongst other things), I don't think you're going to actually see a significant boost in connection speed as that is still very much dependent on your ISP.

There are plenty of reasons to not use the stock firmware but if you don't use the things it's designed for then ultimately the stock firmware will suit you just fine.
