What would your reaction be?

Say you've been seeing a girl for awhile, and being the gentleman that you are, you've always paid for everything. Dinner, movies, show tickets, etc. 100% you buy without thinking about it. You've even been seeing eachother long enough to where people would agree that maybe it's cool to start splitting stuff when you go out, but you don't split it. You buy because that's how you are.

So one Saturday morning you're out at breakfast, and as you're walking up to the front to pay and leave, in a fun/playful/sarcastic-but-friendly way you say to the girl, "So you gonna buy me breakfast?".

She looks at you and replies, "Do I have to?"

What is your reaction?

your with the wrong girl, sorry dude. you fscked up early on by buying her everything. i've always done the 50/50 (well it's more like 70/30), but if you set that precedent early on it's hard to change things.

You made your bed (by buying 100% of the time, every time), now lie in it.

That's what I'm afraid of. I was expecting her to say, "Sure, I can treat you," and then I could reply, "Nah, I'm just messing, I got it."

The "Do I have to?" makes it sound like she's expecting me to pay, like I owe her or something. Am I wrong to be irritated by that?

No, you're not wrong. From the comment, she sounds spoiled, but maybe it just came out wrong.

I think going Dutch is the best way to go.

i would be irritated. She obviously expected you to pay, and fully expected that she was to not pay for anything.

Not that I'd get into that situation in the first place, but I'd probably realize I was a sucker and ditch her.

Well that sucks...either she didn't think her comment through or she doesn't see herself with you long term.

Here is a personal story that happened to me last night:

A girl i've been going out with calls ME up. She says she wants to hang out. I say okay, come over to my place. She basically says okay, but I am poor and don't want to pay for the gas (keep in mind it's probably 6 miles from her house to mine). I am then put in an awkward position so I say, "Well I don't want to pay for the gas either, so I guess I could pick you up on my motorcycle to save on gas (also keep in mind it's about 28 degrees outside). She then takes the hint that I am not going to bend over backwards for her and volunteers to drive herself over saying it's no problem.

WTF? Is that? She calls me up and then wants me to make two round trips for her when she only has to make one round trip? I mean she called me up, I didn't even want her to come over in the first place but said she could if she wanted. I didn't want to pick her up and no way I wanted to drive her home at 3 in the morning. I already knew things were going downhill with this chick but last night was a great confirmation.

Another plus for guys - they don't require all of that attention and babying - I have split almost everything since day one, except the occasional meal we buy for each other. The only costly thing I've paid for was his dinner on his birthday ;)

So you see - I would never have a reaction because I would never let my relationship degenerate into that kind of situation.

"Why sure ... that'd be nice if you did!" :) Start now, or you're done.
