For crunching, an 8-way Xeon box w. 3,6Ghz Xeons w. 2Mb cache, 4Gb RAM and some other goodies would be nice. In his job my cousin has a rack with 144 dual Xeon Blade servers :Q that would be nice too!!! I've often tried to convince to put S@H in them...
 
How about this,

Why not gather up all the old parts you can and built a farm?
You can pick up mobo's and cpu's all in the P4HT category for half the price and put a farm together dedicated to crunching and have twice the raw cpu power.

The only drawback is all the headaches that go with setting it up.

Yeah, I was just wondering what is the most computing power someone could feasibly put in their home. Something that wouldn't take up a whole room or make you take out a second mortgage to pay your electric bill.

Why? Too much power consumption? Didn't I read in one of the F@H setup guide/tutorials that 1 processor uses no more energy than a light bulb or something like that. I seem to remember 150watts an hour or somewhere around there.

 
Realistically (in other words, what I'm hoping / planning to get when I go to college this fall, provided I can scrape together the extra funds), I'm dreaming of a dual dual-core Opteron system with 2GB of RAM (got to have room for all those Big WUs with > 256MB RAM usage). A 20" LCD, an affordable workstation graphics card (I'm going to be a ?E, but don't game), and reasonable hard drive options (maybe 3 200GB drives in RAID 5), and I'd be happy... for about a year. (j/k) 😉

Power usage depends on the CPU. Some, I won't mention any ''cough'' [Prescott] "cough, cough" CPU's use more power than a microwave. OK, I'm exaggerating, but 150 is a little high for most. 100-120 is about right for most CPU's that I know of. Actually Northwood P4's and all A64's except the FX's are gonna be at 100 or less.

But don't forget that you'll be powering more than just the CPU's and that no PSU operates with 100% efficiency, so a certain amount is used to "power" the power supply.

Dollar for dollar, I'll take a slew of 2.4c's OC the crap out of them with 256x2 memory and the cheapest 865 mobo that I can find. That's like $250 per CPU/Mobo/Memory and would do nicely at 3.3-4 hyperthreaded GHz. For a grand, you could have the equivalent of about 24 GHz if you had the needed support parts lying around. And that's not even counting getting the part used like the cheapskate I am 🙂
 
I built one recently a 3.0e for 189 cpu mobo combo

added a 37.00 psu and a 69.99 512mb of ram cost was 308.00 shipping was 20.00 to 25.00

thats 9 to 12 ghz for 1000-1200mhz unless you are counting ht as 9-12 more?

if so mine counts as 11.2 lol
 
I was counting HT as doubling the clockspeed since it gives you two long-pipelined, not that efficient logical CPU's. At any rate, the value of HT has been debated at length, but in DC is one place where it's really effective for increasing the amount of WU you get done.

My family just got another computer. It's a p4 3.2 HT, but I only have 1 instance of F@H's graphics client running on it. What do I have to do to take advantage of the HT with a second CLI instance?

I configured a blade server containing 7 blades, each blade has QUAD XEON 3.0Ghz CPUs, 1Gig ECC RAM, 1 60G HD, with a built in switch, redundant power supplies.

Total Cost with no operating system: $139439.00

While blade servers are great for reducing footprint, they aren't cheap. For that amount of money, you could build one heck of an AMD server farm. 😀

This is best handled in a separate thread, but basically you set up a CLI in a separate folder with a different Machine ID (the GUI client is 1, the CLI is 2, for example). Each client is also run with the -local switch, IIRC. However, it would be better for someone who has an HT system to comment on this, as my comments are based only on what I've read.
 

I did get 2 xeon naconas 2.8's and a enthusiast mobo the NCCH-DL,
a gig of ram with tight timings for overclocking, 2 swifttech heatsinks, a set of seagate x15 drives and a a set of raptors both in raid 0, an lsi card the megaraid 1600, a case with good ventilation ...the cooler master stacker, video card ... the x800 pro (for those non dc times), for sound the audigy 2 zs, and for an optical drive the nec 3520a.Top it off with a 21 inch crt and a 5.1 speaker setup.I think an antec 550 watt psu would fit the bill nicely.
Total price shipped was 1600.00 USD iirc

My preferred cruncher would be the mainframe of the USS Enterprise and maybe I could assimilate Data's brain as well. Hmmm. Speaking of assimilation. I'd love to get hold of the borg collective and run a instance of F@H on every borg brain in my hive!! Hehehe!! That'd awesome! I assume the Enterprise mainframe does a SETI WU in about 2 seconds while Data's brain takes a bit longer but is definilty super-duper-multi-extra-hyper threaded, with 1000 instances at once. And although the borgs can only run one instance at a time, the mere number of them makes up for their single threaded brains.
