<< If I were buying one for personal/home use, I wouldn't buy a lappy. >>

Not even as a second computer? I've got a feeling that it has somethign to do with the proprietary parts in it, and the fact that you cant upgrade much of anything in it (easily). What I'd like to see is laptops take the trend of desktops, where you can change out the processor, video card, and most other parts fairly easily. I'd say that once that starts happening you'll see laptops really start replacing desktops. Most of the people I know haven't/aren't going to buy a laptop for that very reason.

ronin i saw the sr33k with win2k pro, and free sony matchin 16x cdrom for $899 after $100 rebate at frys the other day. the cdrom is like $280 retail, so yeah seemed like a good deal.

also i used my laptops as my primary machine. i havent upgraded anythign on nit, and i think it will last longer than most desktops for me. like the urge to upgrade just isnt there, and i'll probably jsut buy another laptop later. and yea , my main system is a p3-600, 192mb ram (maxed out) 10 inch screen (docked to a 21" nanao). my friends say i've got a wussy cute looking system. its stylish dammit . at least my laptop fits in my normal backpack. my friend needs to bring this big ass dell bag to put his 8100 in

I would have NEVER got a notebook unless I was forced to (by travel). I am back on my desktop and feel so at home right now.

There is nothing like gaming on a flat 19" screen. 14 or 15" doesn't get it for me. And having to use headphones instead of Klipsch, no thank-you.

However, I realize the difficulty of shipping my desktop to Hawaii for only 10 weeks . . . my notebook will do fine (and for once if I watch a crappy movie on the flight it is MY fault). :)

I'd go for a light lappy (~3lb) with a slower P3-M chip inside, as long as the lappy has the minimums, such as 128mb ram, 10gb HDD, and DVD-Rom (who's gonna burn cd's on the road? And who's gonna carry a 50-pack of CD-Rs with them on flights?) Since I prefer light devices, I am totally content with my Cassiopeia E-100 which runs on WinCE.

I just bought a Sony R505 for myself (3.75lbs) and I'm really satisfied with it.

The most important factor for me was weight. After all, what's the point in buying a laptop, if it's too inconvenient to carry around?

My lappy fits comfortably inside of my backpack along with my other books & notes. I was considering a Sony SR (2.9lbs) but decided to go with the slightly larger R505 because of the larger screen and onboard NIC/Modem.

Good luck!

Hmm...even at 5lbs...my T23 is heavier than I wanted:)

If my T23 was only half an inch thinner (no way it's only 1.3" thick, more like 1.5"), and had a Mobile Radeon or GeForce to Go, I'd be set for a long time. As is, the videocard sucks. Other than that, WONDERFUL high quality notebook.

Wish it was a little lighter too!:)
