I don't know if I would have done the same, but I don't see anything wrong with the coach's actions. Like another poster mentoned, life isn't going to pull any punches; I actually think it's a positive thing that some burden was placed on the little guy's shoulders. He's already gone through more than some people will in their entire lives, but this situation will hopefully help show him that 1) the burdens aren't going to stop quite yet, but 2) if given the chance, he's probably capable of a lot more than what he thinks...and even if he fails, no shame in that; all that needs to be done is for him to get up and try again.

i would've done the same thing. if the kid wants sympathy, he should not be playing a competetive sport. What about all the kids oon the winning team? should all of them give up their prize becausee the coach wanted to be nice?

either hurt the feelings of his what 12 players or one kid? the coach's job was to win the game for his team.

only real loser is the coach. he made a decision that won the game for his team by playing smart (walking the best hitter on the other team). life is full of disapointment the people that deal with the kid better understand it. It sounds like the kid knows. he had something like "i'm going ot practice so i am the kid they walk next year" thats a good attitude.

Do you take advantage of the mentally retarded kid and convince him to buy your soda for twenty bucks. ITS A BASEBALL GAME. the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. the coach has a duty to try to win for HIS TEAM.

there was a guy on 3rd 2 outs the score would have tied it. they had the best hitter up to bad. what do you do? WALK HIM.

Why the fvck should the coach risk losing the game to not hurt ONE players feelings? he does something that causes him to lose the game he hurts the feelings of everyone on his team.

so 1 kids feelings hurt is worse then 12? fvck the ossification continues. if he does not want to get his feelings hurt (he is going to be picked on by opposing teams) he should not play competitive sports.

this was not bad sportsmanship. this was good coaching.

How the fvck is it ruining the childs life? IF this is going to ruin his life then he should NOT BE IN SPORTS. hell he should be locked up in the basement because he is in for one hell of a shock when he gets to the real worls.

this is the attitude that is causing sports to be taken out of schools. to have everyone equal. sorry but life sucks sometimes. not everything is perfect.

so the coach should take a risk on loseing and "ruining the life" of his 12 (or so) players?

the kid had a chance to be the hero and blew it. ok fine. so he needs to go take that motivation and work harder. Life is what you make it (oh and stories have the kid saying he is going to work harder)

I'm not saying that we should play favorites or give anyone a free ride, life is full of grey areas where you have to make decisions between what you can do and what you should do. I'm no saint and I am glad I wasn't put in the coaches position, but there are many times in my life that I wished I had done the more noble thing.

If "having fun" is supposed to be the primary goal of playing baseball, why is everyone so fixated on the fact that the team lost? Shouldn't all the parents and coaches be like, "great game" and just walk away knowing that the whole point of baseball (if it's just for fun) is something completely unrelated to the points scored? Instead, by making one coach be the bad guy, and the cancer-survivor be the victim, the media and parents are just reinforcing that winning is the top priority. Again, if winning and losing is not the main focus, why are they upset that the kid lost?

Edit: For that matter, why does the league even have a championship game in the first place if everyone is a winner?

I would have pitched to the guy before him. I can understand teaching kids about fairness and all, but they also need to be taught not to pick on others. And that is exactly what they did.
Nobody would have had a problem hardly at all if the opposing coach elected to pitch to the better batter and he smacked it out of the park. Especially not like the stink this has caused.

Bottom line: Is is just little league. It is for fun and sportsmanship. This was neither.
Those kids that won didn't learn and weren't taught a damn thing, other than their coach wanted a trophy bad enough to do something distasteful to get it.

Yea, the game is about fun and sportsmanship. But at the same time it is sport... it is competition. You play the game to win. The kids parents can cry that you are picking on him all they want. Guess what, thats life. Don't want to be picked on? Don't suck. If you can't handle the heat get outta the kitchen. Don't play in a competitive league if you can't be competitive, or at the very least deal with losing.

The coach made the right move. He played to win. There is no reason to not walk the best player on the team in that situation.


Lets put this in a different context. Say its a basketball game and your team is winning by 3 with 7 seconds to go in the game. You know there is a player on the court that can rain down three's all day long, so you don't let him get the ball. Instead the opposing team is forced to inbound the ball to their worst player. Who just so happens to be a cancer survivor. Do you not foul him and make him shoot free throws, and instead let him pass the ball to a player who can hit the three? No, of course not. You foul him. If he doesn't want to be put in the position to where he has to make a shot, he shouldn't play basketball.


If you don't want to be put in the position of having to hit a baseball, don't F'in play the game. Its that simple.
