ok i have a VERY old crt monitor with a max resolution of 1280x1024 and the cables in back are so damaged i have to tape them downward to even get a signal to the monitor. even with the tape, the screen will go purple/yellow/green/etc... with the slightest bump to the table. on the other hand, i only have a gig of ddr ram and want to keep the rig in my sig for a couple years until i do a complete computer upgrade. so should i either ask for a 20"/20.1" lcd monitor or 2 gigs of ddr ram?. keep in mind i wont have money to get both for months
what would you guys rather get as an upgrade

Buy the LCD monitor now and ask Santa for some ram. Since you already have 2x512 an additional 1GB module should be plenty and that is under $100
The monitor FTW. 
Unless you play certain games that enjoy the extra ram and/or run other software that really utilizes the extra gig of ram, the extra will be a "waste" for your needs. The monitor will increase productivity and overall enjoyability.

Monitor. If you get a dicent LCD you'll notice a HUGE differnce in the quality over what you have now.
If you get the ram you'll have less lag but it's no good if you can't see **** or beat the table when someone takes a full clip and head shots you when your done.

Or get a free 17" - 19 " CRT, so you can have your cache and see it too.

that looks like a great monitor;however, ive been stuck on 1280x1024 all my life and would like to go higher

My housemate last year had a Viewsonic 2030b and it looked nice. I didn't get to see him game on it at all.
I have a couple 2007FPs for my monitors coming from a CRT that did 1280x1024 and I'm quite happy with them. I'm not really a gamer though

With the high price of RAM, the best upgrade now is a new LCD.
Last month I got a 22" LCD Viewsonic from Costco for $299.99.
