It also depends on how much time you have. Many years ago, when we moved a fairly short distance, my wife, and I would move a couple of loads a day. It made setting up the new place ,and vacating/cleaning the old place so much more stress free. We were able to do this cuz we still had 1 month left on our lease, and had already rented the new one.
BTW, at the time I had a 1 ton pick-up with high side panels. It took me 27 trips, my wife made a few trips herself in her car. Heck, I even moved the 2+ cords of firewood.
I concur, you never know how much stuff you have, until you go and start moving it.
