It also depends on how much time you have. Many years ago, when we moved a fairly short distance, my wife, and I would move a couple of loads a day. It made setting up the new place ,and vacating/cleaning the old place so much more stress free. We were able to do this cuz we still had 1 month left on our lease, and had already rented the new one.
BTW, at the time I had a 1 ton pick-up with high side panels. It took me 27 trips, my wife made a few trips herself in her car. Heck, I even moved the 2+ cords of firewood.
I concur, you never know how much stuff you have, until you go and start moving it.

Dude, rent a U-Haul truck. Driving 25 miles back and forth 5 times will add about 4-5 hours to your move just in driving. I'm betting that you are underestimating the number of trips it will take too.

I am....thinking about it now, I think the minimum would be 10 round-trips

I'm just going to rent a U-Haul. I think that's the best thing here

If you are under no time constraints to get everything moved and it isn't out of the way (i.e. no special trips required) move it with your current vehicles. Otherwise, get the rental van of your choice. When I bought my current house, I had 90 days to vacate my previous residence, so there wasn't really any time pressure. Also, I had to pass by my old residence daily on the way to and from work, so it wasn't any big deal for me to stop and get a load in the afternoon and move it.

25 miles, round trip (to make another pickup) = 50 miles. I'll assume it's not all highway and will take you a minimum of an hour of driving each trip. Do you really feel like blowing 5 hours driving? If your time is worth that less than $80/5 hours, then use the CRV.

Actually, it's $80/4 if he has to make 5 trips. Don't forget the trip with the budget/penske.

My suggestion:
"Hey guys! We're having a moving in party at our new place. Since none of you know where it is, meet us at our old place. Drive your trucks that day. Did I mention LOTS of beer??!"

edit: and mini-SUV's should not have the U in there. Where's the utility if you can barely fit anything into them?

Rent a truck from Public Storage/Penske/Budget if there is one near-by. Rates are competitive with U-Haul, and the trucks and service are SO MUCH BETTER it will blow your mind. Also, they actually reserve the physical truck for you.

U-Haul merely makes a note in their computer that you would like a truck on the date. In reality, it's first-come, first-serve, and there is no guarantee they will have the truck you thought you reserved. Then it is moving day and you have no truck. U-Haul will not care. If you are lucky enough to get a truck, they are mostly 1980's era beaters that aren't firing on all cylinders and have rusted-solid mirror adjustments. They will suck. They will weeze. They will shudder and moan. They will stall. They will strand you. U-Haul will not care.

We're about to move 4.5 miles away and I'm getting a U-haul. It's not worth the hassle of trying to fit things in cars/SUVs. One trip and it's done.
