2 honors students... very busy. Only 2 tests this quarter, 3rd unit will have 4 questions on the final exam. Neither has made up the 2 tests they were absent for. 2nd test was May 4.

Progress reports go home today.

Would you expect 0's averaged in? (which constitute 5/7 of the grade)
Or would you expect a 100 average (did 100% of the homework, constituting the other 2/7 of the grade) because the tests would be left blank?

If they have a good excuse for missing the tests, AND they have already asked you for a make-up test, then I vote for the first option. Otherwise, I vote for the 3rd.

I agree - I voted for the 1st option in the poll however.

Average the zeros, and handwrite a note that says "THIS WILL BE YOUR GRADE IF YOUR TESTS ARENT MADE UP BY SUCH AND SUCH DATE"

Actually, it's not me who is responsible for them making up the test... it's been 3 weeks. It's the students whose lack of responsibility would be ruining their future.

Nonetheless, I've gone with the poll... 0's averaged in, chance to make up the tests later.
But, their parents get to see that they've fallen as many as 5 weeks behind in making up exams.

Bingo. In my school, you had one week from when you returned back to school to make up any missed exams/quizzes (except in extreme cases where people were out fo school for 2 or more weeks, where you needed to request a tutor). They were a little more lenient with homework.

If the students don't believe these tests are important enought to make up, why should you give a damn if they get yelled at by their parents or upset over a bad grade?

I had a few friends in High school who were honor students. When their progress reports went home during Senior year, their parents thought "F" meant "Fine" and focused only on the "C" they were getting....... No joke, this was joke among friends for years.

Exactly. eigen's coddling leads to these kids growing up to run over their own children then sue the car company, or get fat on fast food and sue McD.

DrPizza is giving them a chance to shape up and take responsibility, that's the most that they deserve.

If they don't have a valid excuse (being busy is not a valid excuse) for not coming to the two tests they miss they absolutely deserve 0s. This happened not for one but two tests, so they deserve a big fat doughnut on their report card.

edit: Obviously they are taking for granted that you're going to cave and let them make up the tests. I'd give them the 0s with no possibility of change out of principle.

Why let them make it up? Why not give the rest of the class who came a month extra to study? If they knew they were due then, they should have made arrangements before the test...
