Bad idea, you shouldn't even be THINKING about that.

Find a new roommate, there's no excuse for that.

i've loaned a friend a couple thousand dollars once. he's been paying me back every month on time. i wouldnt say he's the most financially responsible person, but he wasnt a deadbeat and thought he could come up withthe money eventually.

it's your call on this guy. from what you described, it doesnt appear he's going to have the means to pay you back. so regardless how sincere he is, i would be very hesitant to cosign. unless he was a really good friend, that you wouldnt mind giving him money to get him back on his feet.

Jeeez, the sheer fact that he's getting a loan out WITHOUT a job should tell you to say no. Why can't he move back home? Seems like a weird situation.

Plus, how'd he get fired from his last two jobs?

i had a friend who was alot like this actually. not in the sense that he owed me month and half of rent money, but in the sense that he would have jobs and get fired quickly, and get another one, then get fired, etc. and he lived on his own, and asked me if i wanted to be one of his roomates. i had to tell him no, and he found 4 others. i know he currently is unemployed, and i have no idea how he is payin his rent.

i used to let him borrow moeny because I felt sorry, but luckily it didn't get too out of hand. over time (the period of a few years) he ended up owing me $50 which I never saw. we used to go out to clubs, and when we got there, he would be like 'i don't have any money, can someone spot me?" he used to do that for EVERYTHING ... going to 7-11, the movies, to get food, etc ... ANYTHING. eventually we were out, just me and him, and he did it again. i told him no that i'm not going to help him because he always does that, and he still owed me money at the time. he kinda tried to look sad, making me feel bad, but i was like 'fvck it.' and didnt give him anything.

from that day on, he has never really asked me for any favors. so to em, this is a job completed :)

Do not get financially involved with friends.

I'm finding that out the hardway...

Anything I "lend" to friends, I don't expect back.

That is the number one rule in loaning money. Never expect it back (yes I know it defies the definition of loan) and if you can't afford to lose it don't loan it.
Yep, that's the exact rule I use.

I think that you should drug him then put him in the bathtub full of ice. After that remove 1 kidney. Sew him back up. Sell the kidney on the black market for $2000. Take your $600 and give him the other $1400. Trust me, he'll thank you in the long run.

Don't co-sign, have him get on unemployment for the time being, at least it will bring in some money for him until he can get a job.

i agree. i would also put up a ad to find a new roomate. If he doens't pay rent , have his ass sleep on the couch and get a new roomate that can pay.

You're a mathlete!........

Have you seen Mean Girls? Lindsay Lohan is the hottest Mathlete I've ever seen

Anyway, for OP, just talk to your friend and explain to him that until he gets his act together you're not going to ruin your future to help him out now. He needs to learn responsibiilty for his own actions and realize that he can't mooch off of other people all the time.

yeah dude, unemployment is the bomb. that will let him pay rent and he'll only sponge pizza money off of you, until he can get a job. also, temp agencies work wonders for short term jobs until he can find a real one.

Some people watch it just because they have a crush on Lindsay Lohan and there is always the restraining order as well...

Don't you have to work a certain amount of time before you can qualify for unemployment?

To answer some questions, he got fired from the original job for being late all the time, he got fired from this latest job not for being late, but for not actually working until 20 minutes or so after he showed up for his shift.

Both of our names are on the lease so I can't really kick him out, not without help from the leasing office.

I pretty much agree with what everyone is saying about not cosigning, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being an @sshole or being unreasonable. Thanks for the input.

DON'T EVER COSIGN A LOAN FOR A FRIEND!!! EVER!!!

If you trust him enough to cosign a loan, then you should trust him enough to sign a promisory note for the money he owes you. If he defaults on his bank loan, he fvcks up your credit; if he defaults on his personal loan from you, you're just out the money (until you take him to small claims court to get it back.) His other bills? HIS PROBLEM, NOT YOURS!! Let him go begging to his parents, it's NOT YOUR PROBLEM.
