I listened to the audio up to the point where she shout him. Why did she not make her presense known and about the shotgun? It seems like it was just a drunk guy who had the wrong house thinking it was maybe a friends house. Not saying she doesnt have a right to defend herself but this doesnt sound like a break in to me. Plus the fact she didnt tell the guy the cops were on the way or anything. Odd.

Why would she feel bad? She told the guy she was armed, and on the phone with police. He clearly saw/heard her, and made the decision to break into the premises. How stupid can you be? Dumb ass deserved what he got.

She went into her kitchen and saw a man trying to break in. The man saw her and screamed threats at her, Mangion said. She told him she was armed and on the phone with police, he said.

Even if she didn't tell him she was armed and on the phone with police, theres no way he didn't see her after she turned all the lights on. It would have been impossible for the guy NOT to see that she was standing there with a shotgun.

Get a shotgun! That's your best chance in a home invasion. After that, I keep a Glock 30 SF (.45 ACP) on hand for follow-up. There's all kinds of instructional videos on youtube, just search "glock". Of course, take some hand-on instructions from local gun clubs, etc. too. Always stay well-trained and ready. Illinois is one of the two most unfriendly "gun-owner" states, but you've still got many rights.

Maybe i missed it in the audio, but i never heard her talk to the guy at all and warn him she has a gun and cops are on the way. She even mentions having all the lights off in the house. Maybe i will listen to it again to make sure i didnt miss anyhting.

yeah someone linked a nice small shotgun thats perfect for home defence. We have a gun club (think its still open. they were getting sued though) i should check out.

Yeah Il sucks for gun owners. if its not a hunting rifle they dont' want you to own it.

FUCK HIM! She did exactly what she should have done. She warned him and he persisted. Serves that douchebag right.

What she should have done was to tell the man to wait on the attack until the cops showed up so that way the cops can arrest the man but noooo this is America, she had to be in the mindset of killing the man by shooting him in the chest straight away. Just kidding of course. She had every right to blow this guy away in that middle of nowhere.

I'm as liberal as they come, and am against the death penalty. But this woman did exactly what she should have done in this situation. Called the cops, warned the perp, then fired one debilitating shot once he answered her warnings with aggression.

I will add that this reminds me of a weird reason why I love owning two dogs - I'll never die in my sleep from a home invader - my dogs would wake me even if someone suspicious parks in front of our place.

Guns are cheaper!

Eh, its a lot better than some states and you can still get what you want.

When I was living in the country I kept my semi-auto AK47 clone propped up behind my bedroom door in case I should need it.

I don't really blame her for shooting but I think she could have given a clearer warning to the guy first. I mean, you stand where he can see you holding the gun and you yell out that if he comes in you are going to shoot him. I didn't hear anything like that in this call.

ban all guns lolz

/antigunnutshit

Good for her, she was able to protect herself from potential death from a scumbag

and what do you suggest she do? police were not there and wouldn't be for a few minutes. the guy was getting into her house.

really what do you suggest?

I live in the country. if we have a fire or police emergency it would take about 20-30 minutes for the cops/fire department/EMS to get here. we understand that if we have a house fire the house is gone (we also pay more home owner insurance then friends in town) and in the event of a accident we need to know what to do (both me and my wife have taken many first aid class's).
only thing we don't own is a gun (well have a old .22 but not sure it works. thing is really old). my wife keeps saying we need to get one but we put it off. not to mention i have little experience with them and have no idea what one ot get.

I am sure there is some place you can go get a basic handgun course near you.

I live in Southern California and there is like 5 places here...

Ditto. I didnt either which is why i posted earlier i think this is odd.

The way i heard the call it sounds like she just blew away some defenseless drunk guy who sounds like he mistook her house for a friend (Pat was it)? I am all for defending your property but with no verbal warning, hiding in the dark, and not letting the guy know you had a gun it almost sounds like straight up murder.

Places where the officer has 20 miles of back roads to drive.

I dunno, google. cushing, ok. E 800 Road isn't that far from cushing or the interstate.

In a situation like this, would popo's have mutual aid like fire depts do?

on a side note, i've never seen such a square grid of roads.

RTFA

Jackson was home alone when her dog woke her up, Mangion said. She turned all the lights in the house on and then armed herself with the shotgun. Her husband was not home, Mangion said.

She went into her kitchen and saw a man trying to break in. The man saw her and screamed threats at her, Mangion said. She told him she was armed and on the phone with police, he said.

The man picked up a patio table and threw it through the patio door, Mangion said. He stepped into the kitchen and that is when she fired the fatal blast, striking him in the center of the chest, he said.

The guy threw a table through the door. I would have feared for my life also...

she did the right thing. had 911 record for proof, blew his ass to hell. nothing else she could have done.

she could have not shot him and gotten attacked for it... 😀 there are always choices, in this case i think she made the correct one.

I'd have gotten a young kid to break in the door and go in first while I stayed in cover so I could deal with an armed homeowner.

Must be nice being able to look at the situation after-the-fact. We may know now that he was just a poor, defenseless drunk guy, but you can't expect a homeowner to know that. You can only judge her based on the information she had at the time, which was that an unresponsive man threw a table through her window and was threatening to invade her home.
