I was chatting on irc when someone came in the channel and posted all this mans personal credit report.. it included EVERYTHING.. including phone numbers that he could be reached at. AND valid credit card numbers.

Well... What i did was called the number listed and left a message on their answering machine (answering machine confirmed that it was the right household) to let them know that all that information is out and i left my name and number so they could call me back and maybe i would be able to give them more information on the idiot.

What would you have done? Ignored it? Called?

Also.. whats the current time in alabama?

UPDATE-

So the guy called me back and he was extremely thankful. He said a girl had called him about 4 months ago for the same thing but he couldnt get any information from her and he hopes that now that i actually saved the information he will be able to track the moron down.

*wipes the dust off her hands*
my good deed done for the day.

Did you contact the moderators of that channel and ask for information? (I don't know how much power/access IRC mods have...)

they dont have any more information than what i do. I saw the ip address of the person.. and i think the person was stupid enough to use their real name in their whois information.

Write it all down and goooooo shoppppping!

No, you did good by calling and leaving a message... I'd go ahead and collect all the information about the person who posted it on IRC as well (IP address, ISP, etc)... so when the guy charges the person with identity theft, you can be the witness / provider of evidence.

Then take all the info down (obviously) and save it; if you can get an address from the person affected, send it to them.

yes i definitely saved all the information already.

I'd try my best to track down the stain that posted it and see if you can't get them busted.

No clue on how to do that IRC though. Would the operator be able to track IP's?

My coworker visited NYU's website once and contracted a trojan (yes, confirmed it was just by browsing the site). All his keystrokes were being spat out into an IRC channel for all to see.

Quite scary.

In your situation, I would've just anonymously given the victim the lead / headsup but would have severed contact after that. I don't want to be tied into any kind of "trouble" on the Internet.

Yeah, but then that would have been a very LONG message. I would prefer to just have them call me back if they want more information so they can pursue it further.
