lacks responsibility thats for sure..he sure screwed up on " free money" that was to be his...maybe a swift slap to the side of the head may help

Just because he's messing up is no reason to get him killed. At another time this might be an option, but right now it's moral and possibly even physical suicide. Especially for someone who isn't disciplined or driven.

Get him into the Navy. Then at least he's not a ground pounder.

That may keep him physically safe, but there is still a serious moral issue for many people. Probably not him so it may be fine, but it is a consideration. And the miltary is certainly not 'all that'. I served and had my fun but overall it mostly reinforced my negative opinions about the government, military, and America in general. You could end up convincing him to join and it could be terrible for him, and make things much, MUCH worse.
