Misread that to mean that he and his gf were old, and so why would you want to bang her?

According to ad and first meeting you owe him nothing, he failed to disclose it didn't work, he failed to take the $ upon his departure, he failed clean up his mess. Tell him the money you might have paid him went to the repair. BTW, change the locks...

I just moved into a new place. The previous tenant (we'll call him assbone) put out the for rent ad, was my initial contact, and showed the townhouse. He seemed like a great guy.... but it quickly went downhill. Here is the timetable:

1. Ad that assbone created promoting the rental says "Washer and Dryer included"
2. Upon first meeting, assbone tells me he can't take washer/dryer with him and that we can have them for free - they're kinda old, doesn't seem like a shock.
3. Visit number 2, assbone starts to hint that he wants money for them. I'm slightly irritated - but he leaves the amount to my discression. I intend on giving him $100 for both as I'm not sure how long they'll last. (Yea, maybe I'm a pvssy for offering anything, but I felt it was fair).
4. Assbone vacates. Leaves behind clothes, huge bags of garbage leaking in the living room and sink full of crap water/stove parts sitting for over two weeks. I start to think poorly of assbone.
5. First week in the new place, I wash a huge load of laundry, toss in dryer for an hour. Clothes are still wet- the dryer is not heating. Dryer has electric ignition - so not a pilot light issue, dryer is broken. At this point I decide to nickname previous tenant "assbone".
6. Luckily I "know a guy" who fixes dryer for next to nothing - works great now.
7. Yesterday assbone calls and "apologizes" for crap left behind. He brings up payment for washer - now I immediately notice he ONLY says washer this time, when all along he clearly said washer AND dryer. I ask if he was aware dryer was broken. He said yes, tells some story about how it hasn't worked for seven months prior. Acts like I should have somehow know even though he wanted money and never hinted that there was any issue with it.

What would you do?

EDIT I am currently wavering between paying $50 or telling him to f-off.

Wouldn't pay him crap.

My first thought was to remind him that he ad said they were included and in the first meeting he said that they were free, and then tell him that he can come and get them if he wants to renege on that. But then you did say you offered him $100 for both of them in a later meeting, so I"d probably tell him I'd give him $50 for both since you'd have to get the dryer fixed. The only problem with that is that he'll probably start thinking that he could get the dryer fixed too and sell it for a few bucks. If he brought up something like that I would just tell him to come and get both of them and be rid of him.

P.S. I hope you got the locks changed when you moved in.

Other: The $100 is the fee you are charging him for cleaning the mess he left behind. Call it even.

I think you would be nuts to pay him one dime considering the way things worked out.

You live there now, they're in your place, he can sit and spin if he doesn't like it. Pay him NOTHING.

Tell him you're no longer interested in the washer and for him to come pick it up.

My guess is he won't. Wost case scenario he will, and you'll have to buy a new one, but you're probably better off with a new one anyway.
