What would you do in our situations?

My system

I'm thinking about jumping on the BFG 6800 deal from Besy Buy ($300 plus Far Cry and Doom 3 free). Would you guys spend the $300? I play just about every game under the sun, and my current 5900 would be put into my second PC to upgrade a flaky Ti4600.

Friend's system:

Athlon XP 2600+ (Thoroughbred 333FSB)
Abit NF7-S 2.0
BFG GeForceFX 5700 Ultra
512MB Samsung PC3200 RAM

His options are the aforementioned BFG 6800 deal or a $180 9800 Pro from Fry's, but no Far Cry or Doom 3. He wants to play HL2 mostly, but will also play Doom 3 and other games. He would proably sell his 5700 Ultra for about $100. Again, what would you guys do?

We're both leaning towards the 6800 but I'd like some input.

I'd go for the Matrox card... uh, nevermind, that's for Photoshop, not Doom 3. ;)

The 6800 would be my choice if I were in the market for a gaming card, especially for D3.

Wait for next gen cards available in your price range.

The geforce 6600, 6600GT, Geforce 6800, Geforce 6800GT, X800SE, X800Pro are all good cards in their area. I DO NOT reccomend the X600XT, its not faster than the Radeon 9600XT

The money really isn't an issue, as I'm basically getting a 6800 for $210 when you factor in the cost of the games and I have the cash available. Ahh I hate having money :(.

If you guys can't afford a GT, hang on to what you got and have your friend save a bundle by buying a 9800pro, which will likely outmatch a 6800 vanilla in HL2.

Grab a 6800. With D3 and Far Cry that is one sweet deal. Your friend should get a 6800 too though I accidently voted for a 9800 pro for him WUPS!!

If you can I would wait for a GT but if you really are itching for it go the vanilla route.

Both of those just don't seem to justify the price you pay. If it were me, i'd just keep either one of those cards for another 2 months or so, and see how the prices look then. (And let's face it, a 5900XT or 5700 Ultra isn't exactly going to kill you ;))

If you have to have it now, yes get the 6800.

If you can hold out for a couple more months you might be able to get the gt for $300.

I went to BB today and they magically had not one but two GTs, so I got one. My friend is going to get a 6800. Thanks for the suggestions.
