What would you do if your roomate hit/bumped your car?

I live in a college town and the house that we rent doesn't have space for all of us to park, so there is always at least two cars stacked against each other. What really pisses me off about this situation is that a couple of my roommates think they when they park behind someone they have to nudge up against the car in front of them. I am the only one who doesn't own a beater, and I've mentioned before that I don't want them bumping into my car. They basically disregarded my request saying that it doesn't hurt anything, cars have 5mph bumpers, etc.

Anyways, Tuesday I went outside to get some measurements on my car and surprise, surprise, one of my rommates's car is touching my back bumper. I was upset, but didn't think too much about it beacause it is a fairly common occurance. This morning before work I went outside to load some stuff in my trunk and I noticed a dime size chunk of paint missing off of my bumper and some scuffs. He's the only one that has been parked behind me since then, so I'm quite sure that the damage was the result of him bumping into my car when parking. However, since it's now three days later I'm sure he's going to deny it.

I guess the real question is, what kind of car do you have? If its fairly new (ie, within the 2-3 years or so), then I'd sure be upset and make him pay for the repair (probably a few hunderd, maybe less, on a dime sized chunk and some scuffs). If its older then that, then I wouldnt be too upset.... but still make him pay to get it fixed (if you can get it out of him).

I would see if the mark matches up with the front bumper of his car and then once
sure of it I would go and hand him a bill for the repair of your car and if he didn't
pay I would beat his head with anything handy.

Um...welcome to the wonderful world of parking in the city?

Seriously, if you're that concerned about your car, maybe you should just rent another parking space somewhere. When I park on the street, I almost expect my car to get bumped.

But I drive an old beater as well.

I guess you could get a really annoying car alarm that would go off when they bumped your car.

Just say you're pretty upset and ask him nicely to pay for it. It shouldn't be too much to fix and he'd probably make sure not to do it again.

If I had a room mate and he hit my VW Bus, he would be sleeping on a bench in the park, that's for sure.

i get pissed if i find scratches on my 98 honda civic. if someone messes up a car it'd be NICE if they admitted to it and offered to pay for the damage because obviously they were not careful enough.

I really hate people with beater's as they tend to think of all car's like their own. At CC there was a guy with one of those old honda civic's like from the 70's that would park front bumper to front bumper with others, bump people at stop signs, and park inches from one's door. I never had an incident with him, but his 'friends' all would complain, yet do nothing about it.

His comment was always "It's just a car, they are going to get dinged and banged up anyway."

Eventually the school police handled it I heard by removing his parking rights on campus.

I see other's with similar behavior putting there stuff on another's car while they load up the POS they drive, banging their doors into the sides of other cars, resting their shopping carts on the other car, etc.

Get a tow hitch or warn him that if there are anymore problems, he will be paying for the damages. If you really care, make him pay for these.

It's a dick attitude to think just because someone's car isn't a
new expensive one that you have the right to bump and ding
it IMHO.

I know what you mean man. I have a 98 Mazda and it's nice.
My rear bumper was fairly ok when I purchased it and now I got marks everywhere!
I got ppl who have to be all up my a$$ for some reaosn when they park. The front
is cool cuz i got a front license plate thing and if someone rubbed up on it, it's cool, except
for the SUV which are taller!

Moral of the story? I need my own house with a driveway

i thought you said you dont drive a beater...

Your main concern comes from the car's resale value im assuming, however due to the make and model of your car, it will depreciate like noones business so dime size chip on the bumper will make virtually no diff at all....

I live in a college town and we had similar problem earlier this year. Someone scraped the crap outta the my buddies new xterra. I dont think anything really came out of it, he just got some touch up paint and painted it over.

My comment to him would be "It's only your face and it's going to age with time anyways so I'll
go ahead and put my foot right between your eyes a few times, after all, it's going to look bad
eventually" :)

I would make him pay........it doesn't matter who the person is I would still hold them responsible for some kind of repayment.

Wait until your bumpers are touching again then say something to him. It would be pretty hard for him to deny any damage at that point.

Find another place to park if your that worried about it.

This is why I recommend college students just buy a beater until you graduate. Until you have a garage and/or a driveway, you are at the whim of every other schmo who uses the road/lawn/lot that you have to park your car in.

Back in college I had a very good relationship with my roommates. One was a guy I'd lived with on and off for all four years and the other two were cute girls.

Also, we had a driveway with two stacked spaces and overhead cover on one of the spaces so I was always inside. I'm sure if I ever got hit by one of them, they'd offer to pay before I even brought it up.
