I agree with Kranky here. Tell her you expect to be repaid by the end of the week. Then, go to another branch and remove almost all of your money. Leave enough in the account to keep it open, so she can transfer the funds back. Open a new account at another bank.

I know this is a hassle, but you need to protect your funds. Good luck.

The simplest solution is the best. Whatever the outcome, you will get your money back (or a bit more if the bank feels need to compensate you to bring this problem to their attention). Get most your money out and wait.

Well, my sister called me today and claimed she lost her job. For what, I'm not sure. She originally said I'd have the money this week, based on today's conversation I doubt that will happen. I cleaned out the account of funds, but it's still open. I thought I'd give her the chance to redeposit it. I told her she has until Jan. 31st to repay me. Now I'm mad, I just want my money. The whole thing is a mess, I'm sure our relationship is ruined and I'm really at a loss, I'm not sure what to do. This is bad, :(.

Switch banks asap because who knows, she could still be employed. How often do banks layoff?

I would report it to the bank and let her deal with the circumstances. Sister or not, nobody should touch your bank account without your permission. I would fry her ass.

Oh yeah and switch banks.

What bank is this? I work for the 3rd Largest bank in the US, and I haven't heard any layoffs.

I used to work at a bank, and lemme say that this type of thing happens all the time. The employees always borrow money from family's account and put it back. but usually they put it back in a day or two. I don't think that you should report her because it's not like she took your money and didn't say anything to you. No matter what she's still family. I know she lost her job now, and I hope that it wasn't because you reported her. It would be sad if she lost a job as a bank manager for about a 1000 dollars. Now, I'm not saying that what she did is right, I'm just saying that she's part of your family so give her a couple of weeks to pay you back if you don't need the money now.

The only problem with that idea is that checks written against that account have to have the money in there to clear. So, not only did she steal your money, but she also has what's left in there locked up since if you withdraw the rest, your credit rating is ruined when checks start bouncing left and right.

From what you have said I would say she has a drug problem too. Anyways change banks asap. If she has the nerve to do it once she wont heistate to do it again. Then tell her you want your money NOW.

Here is what I would do:

1. Remove all money not essential to your ability to not bounce checks and deposit it somewhere else.
2. Since she already lost her job, play the answering machine message for the bank manager. You will have your money in a second, it doesn't matter the relationship you have-- if a bank employee screws you, the bank fixes the problem instantly and will get the $ out of the employee one way or another (they'll probably garnish her last paycheck).
3. Ask her to see EVERYTHING. Her supposedly bouncing checks, her checkbook ledger, everything. Make her account for every penny.

If she hadn't lost her job I'd given her an ultimatum like "end of business today all money is back" or I'll make the bank reverse the unauthorized transaction.

Well folks, I don't read the paper. I just found out today that my sister was arrested on Tuesday for stealing thousands of dollars. She's facing felony charges that carry 7 yrs. in jail. It's too bad, I have mixed feelings but I guess she got what she deserved. :(

I think you are all forgetting that she stole the money while an employee of the bank. It doesn't matter that she's his sister. The bank should be legally liable for the illegal transaction and he should be able to get his money back from THE BANK. It's up to them to settle the problem with his step-sister or their insurance. There should be NO WAY he should personally be out any money whatsoever. He did not make the transaction.

Wow, she just got your account number and took money. Sure sounds illegal to me and you should have a little chat with her.

Try to see if her story has any validity, and see if she deposits in within one week. If she doesn't, you contact the proper authorities. It is odd that she can take money out easily but not deposit? ya right...
Most likely it sounds like she needed the cash quickly for something and thinks she can get the money back soon. Drugs would work as a probable cause but you need proof to get drug charges on her.

She's the Bank Manager.
She knows my account number, she did an electronic transfer to some savings account. Who knows, maybe it's her account?
Without your consent? :Q
That is soooo very illegal....
