What would you buy if were you in my shoes.

I am going to purchase an AMD X2. I am having trouble deciding what would work best for my situation.

A8N-SLI DLX | 3400+ NC | Corsair 1GB Value | A BFG 7800GTX is on the way | 74GB Raptor | 200GB Seagate | NEC 3540 | Enermax Whisper 535

I have not tried to do any OCing yet, and I want to give it a go. I have read a few guides, and feel comfortable with it.

Here is my dilemma,
I have $700 to spend.
Which would you choose?
A) 4400
B) 4200 + 1GB G. Skill DDR400 2-2-2-5

I am open to other suggestions as well.

B) get the 4200 with a gig of RAM, it's useless to use a CPU without memory

plus with those CAS timings? you're in for a nice treat

i'd drop the raptor and get the 4400 with 2 gigs of mushkin hp blue cl2 (2 x 1024). you can add a raptor later if you wanted.

And you're replacing a 3400+? You won't see much improvement unless you use a lot of multithreaded programs or multitask like crazy.

Yeah, you're already very decent in the processor area... is there something specific you're not happy with right now?

Are all your peripherals nice too? You might have a better overall computer experience if you spent it on a new monitor/speakers/etc. if what you have is not very nice already (just a thought)

Yup, but even the corsair should hit over 210... Not much, but definately makes choosing a divider easier... My mushkin can go over 220 @ 2.5-3-3 (haven't actually maxed it out yet).

Go the 4400+. The extra cache will probably make a bigger difference than extra RAM. And RAM is easier to upgrade later.

Also, I know that corsair XMS will go to 220MHz@2-3-3-6, even though it's only rated to do 200MHz@2.5-3-3-8(on AMD). I'm sure it'll go further, I've just never tried.

4400+ for extra cache. Use a divider and get the Corsair VS, unless you're planning on getting some insane clocks out of your system I mean.

First of all, you should get the A8N SLI PREMIUM board not the Deluxe board...they are basically the same price and the Premimum board fixes the chip set fan probelm on the Deluxe boad (among other improvements). Do a search on this forum on comparisons between these boards.

No problem hitting 229MHz RAM speed with Corsair VS. Timing is 2.5-3-3-8-1T. Vdimm 2.7VDC.

I all ways forget a few details.

I have been using the rig I listed for 6 months now. I am just doing some upgrades.
Any parts that I replace I will be using in a rig for my bro...

So far I am leaning towards the 4400.

I know I can replace my RAM later, but I am using a XP120. So to remove my RAM I would also have to remove the heatsink. I just want to make sure that as I venture into OCing I won't kick myself later for not replacing my RAM at the same time.

Does running the RAM at 1:1 make a noticeable difference?
