What would you buy -8800GTS (G92) or 8800GTX (same price)

So, I got an offer for a brand new GTX (XFX) for about the same money as 8800GTS 512 (BFG, ASUS, ...); GTX still delivers overall better performance, but consumes more (=produces more heat), is louder with stock cooling -the new GTS on the other hand has a 256bit bus (I have a 22" LCD) and 'only' 512MB of RAM (but I think even Crysis on high takes only about 400MB of GRAM ...).
What would you buy?
Should I still go with the GTS or even wait for the GF9 in 2008Q1 (but I suspect that the first two models will have a price tag more than +120-150$/? over the GTS today)?

If you want more than a 512mb, you may want to wait for the 1gb versions of the GTS G92 to appear as the 88GT has. The GTS G92 512 will do just fine at 16x10 on your 22''. One could see it if you had a 24'' LCD, but I think it would do you fine.

Yeah, but folks, which one offers better all around performance? If they are both the same price, and offer identical performance at all resolutions, I'd say go for the new GTS. If the GTX walks away at higher resolutions because of wider bus and 256MB more GDDR3, then I'd say go for the GTX. Don't know about your needs, but I couldn't give a fart about PureVideo. Maybe you do.

I think the new GTS G92 is roughly equivalent to an 8800GTX at 1920x1200 resolution.

At least without AA and AF. When those are enabled the GTX takes over a little bit.

Overall performance wise I'd say GTX but I wouldnt buy one right now considering the new GTX/Ultra high end cards launch sometime Q1 2008. And yes, the new cards will be pricey. Figure $600 at least for the highest one. Probably hard to find first week or two also. I suppose you could try and plan a eVGA Step Up plan. Buy something now if you absolutely need it and then step up to the new cards when they come out. You got to plan it correctly though which is the hard part. We dont know for sure when in Q1 2008 they come out and you only get 90 days to time it correctly. Wait till after January 1st obviously to maximize the 90 day program.

For the same price, hah, I'd buy the 8800gtx. The GTS sometimes is on par with the GTX, but at higher resolutions and with AA it's lower memory bandwith starts to show. This is only going to get worse in newer games. Most definately the 8800gtx. Who gives a darn about those 50w it may consume over a gts, if your so energysensitive go read a book or shoot some hoops.

One thing to keep in mind is that the GTS can typically reach much higher core speeds than the GTX if both are clocked up. That may turn things in the GTS's favor if you aren't playing at very high resolutions.

True, but the GTS is already clocked at 675 at stock, correct? I really don't know how much higher people have gotten out of them.

Well, people were posting 750-780 pretty routinely in that GTS overclocking thread (reference speed is 650). Most of the GTX speeds I've seen in people's signatures seem to be around 640 or so, at least on the stock cooler.

GTX eventually will give better resale value in my opinion. I would go for the GTX between the two. Both OCed I think they will give around the same performance with out AA and AF and slightly better performance on the GTX with them enabled.

I think because of the bigger memory and bus i would go for the GTX

but unless your playing at like 1920x1200 on your 24" monitor or with lots of resolution the difference is minimal, and if you care for the amount of power your pc is using for sake of the bills or the environment you might want to consider the gts due to its lower power usage

Plus like just stated the gtx has better resaleability once your finished with it

As others said the GTX is typically better in high resolution/AA situations. If they're the same price and especially if the GTX is rev. A3 I'd go with that over the GTS. The GTS can hit extremely high core/shader OCs but as ArchAngel777 showed with a few quick tests, the 256-bit bus and ~1000MHz max memory frequency can result in a bandwidth bottleneck which limits the benefit of the higher core/shader clocks. As for GF9, I'd expect it to carry a similar price as previous NV high-end when new, ~@500-600 USD.

I want to do HD and Blu Ray so that means the 8800GT or GTS right there. GTX margins are small statistically and even the GT even exceeds in some measures. This was a good review:

I don't know how hard it is to a passive cooler on a GTX either. If its harder than a GT then I would be sorry about that since the GT cleans up nice sound wise.

I'd probably go with the 8800GTS 512MB, because it has more overclocking headroom. Alot of people are getting close to 800MHz, and even some beyond with the 8800GTS 512, meanwhile the 8800GTX probably won't exceed 650MHz, if you get that far.

In some situations you may do better with the GTX's 384-bit bus, but in general an OC'd GTS 512 > OC'd GTX.

I'd also look into getting the eVGA version of either, for the step-up program. Usually it ends up being useless, but if you buy a card now the GeForce 9 series, or at least a "GX2" G92 card may be available for step-up.

...if the price is the same, I would definitely go with a GTX. If your options are a GTS for ~$375 or a GTX for $500+, then the GTS is the way to go.

as far as noise goes, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between both cards.

For what boils down to a few frames/sec I would go for the new, G92, technology. The GTX is huge, runs warm and sucks the juice...

I would not wait more that a week or two for anything, if you want and or need an upgrade then just do it, there will always be something better comming out next month or next quater or whatever.

With AA (AF not so much) GTX takes over a lot ...

Thx for the info guys, still deciding.

BTW, all manufacturers put on the same RAMs, right?
Or in other words; if I want to have the best OC possible, does it even make a difference whos card I buy or is it pretty much random luck? Are the preOC models any different?
