What would use less power on a photocopier...

Turning off when not in use...

Or letting it stay on in sleep mode.

We use it twice a day, and its a giant copier (business copier..completely overkill for the 7 people working here)

The problem with this is that there really is no standard. So to get to the point, it depends on the quality of the printer.

I mean...Sleep Mode, Energy-Saver, Power-Save, Idle Mode, Suspend, Doze, Standby, and Low Power... Can you tell me the difference of all of them?

Usually though, sleep mode powers down to about 15% or less of what it would use fully operational.

You're in Alberta, right? Unless I'm mistaken, you have the heat on this time of year. Therefore, it doesn't matter. Every last bit of energy that's "wasted" will simply aid in heating your office.

I usually turn it off using the switch. Of course the next morning, someone bitches about the 2 minute warm up time.

Even worse, Xerox Phaser warm up times.

I work on copy machines. Turn it off when not in use. It will bake the fuser, dry out silicone oil in the rollers, and result in more pointless service calls, etc. As far as the power savings, you should still turn it off. Typical Toshiba power savings lowers the heat from around 200 centigrade to 160. In other words, you wait four minutes vs. thirty seconds.

I realize this, but I fail to see how energy savings or losses due to the photocopier affect the heating of the building.

DainBramaged, thanks! It is a Toshiba :)

The extra energy being used while in "power save" versus being "off" is used to keep the drum warm, and that heat will radiate from the copier.

Aww..now my curiosity is tweaked. When you say a giant business model, I would guess 5540, 5560 or e-650. Any idea?

Interesting... I've spoken with *many* technicians that work on HP Laser Printers, Canon copiers, and Konica-Minolta laser printers and copiers. Some recommend powering them down, but some recommend leaving them powered up. Is there any advantage at all to leaving them powered up, other than the decreased wait time?

As far as the ones I have ever worked on, no. It is just more wear and tear to leave it sit.

Sounds fine to me

Not the ideal way of saying it, but if you're that hard up for posts then whatever.
